Mithun Chakraborty is a name that resonates with Bollywood fans across generations. Today, he’s a celebrated actor, a business mogul, and one of the most respected figures in Indian cinema. However, the road to his success was far from easy. Mithun’s rise from poverty, struggling to find a place in Bollywood, to becoming a superstar with a net worth of Rs 400 crores, is a story of persistence, determination, and incredible resilience.

In 2024, Mithun Chakraborty is being honored with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema. But before the awards and fame, he faced numerous challenges that tested his spirit.

Facing Discrimination and Struggles in Early Bollywood Days

Born as Gourang Chakraborty in Kolkata, Mithun came from humble beginnings. His early days in Mumbai were filled with hardship. After completing his studies at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), he moved to Mumbai to chase his Bollywood dreams. However, success was not immediate. In fact, Mithun had to sleep on footpaths, go hungry for days, and face numerous rejections because of his dark complexion.

Bollywood in the 70s had a stereotypical image of a “hero,” and Mithun’s dark skin didn’t fit into that mold. He himself shared in interviews how top actresses of that era refused to work with him. Despite his talent, he faced discrimination purely based on his looks.

The Turning Point: Zeenat Aman’s Support and Disco Dancer

One of the key turning points in Mithun’s career came when Bollywood diva Zeenat Aman decided to work with him. Zeenat, a top star at the time, praised his looks and took a chance on him. Mithun has often credited her for helping him break the stigma associated with his appearance. Her support marked a shift in how people viewed him in the industry.

Mithun’s big breakthrough came with “Disco Dancer” in 1982, a film that turned him into a household name overnight. The film was not only a massive success in India but also earned a cult following internationally, especially in countries like Russia. “Disco Dancer” was a game-changer, earning Rs 100 crore worldwide, a huge sum for the early 80s.

Mithun’s unique dance style and energy in the film became his signature, and suddenly, everyone wanted to work with him. His dance moves in “Disco Dancer” became iconic, and he cleverly used his dancing skills to divert attention from the color of his skin, as he once said, “If I dance with my feet, no one will notice my color.”

    From B-Grade to A-List Actor

In the early part of his career, Mithun had to work in several B-grade films, where he often played secondary roles. He confessed that there were times he thought he would never make it to A-list films. Top actresses refused to work with him, and producers were reluctant to cast him in lead roles. However, Mithun’s hard work paid off, and the success of “Disco Dancer” pushed him into the A-list league.

He went on to star in hit films like “Pyaar Jhukta Nahi,” “Swarg Se Sunder,” “Hum Paanch,” and “Boxer.” In the 80s and early 90s, he became one of the most bankable stars of Bollywood, with audiences flocking to theaters just to watch him dance and act.

    Mithun’s Struggle with Personal Insecurities

Despite his success, Mithun has always been vocal about the struggles he faced internally due to the color of his skin. He admitted that it made him feel inferior at times. In interviews, he shared how he used to cry after being ridiculed or ignored because of his complexion. He once said, “People didn’t accept me as a hero because of my looks. It hurt, and I used to cry, but I never gave up.”

His success wasn’t just about talent; it was about proving the world wrong. Today, his story is an inspiration to millions who face discrimination or feel rejected due to their appearance.

Mithun’s Diverse Ventures: Business and Politics

Beyond his acting career, Mithun Chakraborty ventured into business and politics. He owns multiple businesses, including a chain of hotels. His hotel in Ooty is particularly famous and has contributed significantly to his net worth. Mithun’s entrepreneurial spirit has been a major factor in his financial success, and today, he is estimated to have a net worth of around Rs 400 crores.

In addition to his business ventures, Mithun has also been involved in Indian politics, adding another layer to his multifaceted personality.

    Awards and Recognition

Over the years, Mithun has received numerous accolades. His debut film “Mrigya” won him his first National Film Award, and he went on to win two more for his performances in “Tahader Katha” (1993) and “Swami Vivekananda” (1996). In 2024, he will be honored with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, a fitting tribute to his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2024, one of the highest civilian honors in India.

Mithun Chakraborty: A Legacy of Resilience and Stardom

Mithun’s journey is not just a story of a Bollywood star; it’s a tale of resilience, grit, and unwavering belief in oneself. From sleeping on footpaths to becoming a superstar, Mithun’s rise in Bollywood is a lesson for aspiring actors and dreamers everywhere.

His career, which spans over 350 films, continues to inspire millions. Even after decades in the industry, Mithun remains a beloved figure, not just for his performances but for his incredible story of overcoming adversity and rising to the top.
