In a major political buzz, former BJD MP Pinaki Mishra and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra have tied the knot in Germany. The couple’s wedding picture has gone viral on social media, surprising many with the news of this high-profile union. While both are known faces in Indian politics, their financial backgrounds show a stark difference.
Who is Pinaki Mishra? Odisha’s former MP with one of the highest declared assets
Pinaki Mishra, a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court, has a long political history. He was elected as Member of Parliament from Puri constituency in Odisha for the first time in 1996. Later, he won from the same seat again in 2009, 2014, and 2019. However, in the 2024 elections, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) did not field him as a candidate.
In 2019, when he filed his nomination papers, Pinaki Mishra declared assets worth ₹117.47 crore, making him the richest MP from Odisha at the time. Of this, his movable assets stood at ₹89.87 crore and immovable properties at ₹27.60 crore. He also had liabilities worth ₹2.19 crore.
Apart from his political career, he runs multiple companies and has business interests, according to media reports. His wealth not only comes from his law practice but also from investments and holdings in various firms.
Mahua Moitra’s political career and modest asset profile
Mahua Moitra, who represents the Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal, is a well-known face in Indian Parliament known for her sharp speeches. During the last Lok Sabha elections, she submitted her asset details through an election affidavit.
According to her affidavit, she had total assets worth ₹3.5 crore. Unlike her husband Pinaki Mishra, Mahua had no liabilities. Her cash in hand was reported to be just ₹50,000, while she had over ₹1.89 crore in her bank accounts. Additionally, she had investments worth ₹14.74 lakh in shares, debentures, and other bank-related instruments.
Marriage of two politicians with different financial paths
The recent marriage of Pinaki Mishra and Mahua Moitra brings together two very different financial and political journeys. While Mishra has been associated with Odisha politics for decades and held significant personal wealth, Moitra has created a strong identity in national politics with a more modest financial profile.
With this union, two strong political minds have come together, each bringing their own experience and outlook into their personal and public lives.
