The 1981 classic Umrao Jaan is not just known for its music, poetry, and storytelling, but also for the emotional stories that unfolded behind the scenes. As the film gets a re-release in theatres after 44 years, old memories and untold truths are resurfacing—especially those involving Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan.
Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, who directed the film, recently shared how deeply personal this film was, not just in its subject matter, but also in what happened during its making. In a conversation with Yasser Usman, the author of Rekha’s biography, Ali opened up about Rekha’s emotional state and her unspoken bond with Amitabh Bachchan.
Rekha’s Eyes Carried the Pain Umrao Jaan Needed
Umrao Jaan tells the story of a courtesan in Lucknow during the 19th century, and Rekha’s performance made the film iconic. Muzaffar Ali said he saw something in Rekha that he couldn’t find in anyone else—a silent pain, emotional depth, and understanding of life’s struggles.
He shared that Rekha had the kind of expressive eyes he needed for the role. “She carried pain inside her,” Ali said, “the kind that fits Umrao Jaan’s world of poetry and longing.” That emotional depth, according to him, came from real experiences, which she unknowingly used in her performance.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Quiet Connection with the Film
What many people don’t know is that Amitabh Bachchan often visited the sets of Umrao Jaan while it was being shot in Delhi. He never had a role in the film, but his presence was frequent. What made this interesting was how Rekha behaved around him.
Muzaffar Ali revealed, “Whenever Amitabh came to the set, Rekha referred to him as ‘woh’ or ‘unhone’, like a wife talks about her husband.” He further said that Rekha had emotionally accepted Amitabh as her husband, even though they were never officially married.
This connection was never spoken about publicly by the two actors, but Ali’s words confirm what many had long suspected—that Rekha had imagined a personal relationship with Amitabh that went beyond professional boundaries.
Rekha Would Disappear from the Set Without Notice
Ali also recalled moments during the shooting when Rekha would suddenly vanish from the set. It happened more than once, and it would often halt production. When the team asked Rekha about it, she said she walked away in her sleep and didn’t remember anything afterwards.
These sudden disappearances created delays in filming. But Muzaffar Ali didn’t get angry. Instead, he tried to understand her state of mind. He believed she was going through emotional stress that even she didn’t fully understand or express.
Rumours, Silence, and A Broken On-Screen Pair
The talk of Rekha and Amitabh’s closeness had already started after they starred together in Do Anjaane. Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, and their off-screen bond became the talk of the town. However, after some time, Amitabh reportedly decided not to act with Rekha anymore. That decision affected both their personal lives and careers, though they never spoke about it directly.
According to Ali, Umrao Jaan carried the emotional weight of that lost relationship. “Rekha didn’t need to act much. Her pain was real. Her emotions were drawn from life,” he said.
The Film, the Character, and the Emotional Truth
Rekha’s performance in Umrao Jaan won her the National Award. But more than that, it became the most talked-about role of her career. She didn’t just play a courtesan—she became one, with every dialogue soaked in real emotions.
As the film hits the theatres again after four decades, fans can now see the masterpiece from a fresh angle—knowing that behind every poetic moment and soulful dance was a woman who was silently dealing with love, pain, and emotional turmoil.
