Peter Sarsgaard, celebrated for his versatility in acting, recently joined The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, recorded live at the Newport Beach Film Festival. Honored with the Film Performance of the Year Award, Sarsgaard took a deep dive into his distinguished career and his recent notable projects: the film September 5 and the Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent.

In September 5, Sarsgaard portrays ABC Sports producer Roone Arledge, who faced the challenge of covering the tragic 1972 Munich Olympics attack. Meanwhile, in Presumed Innocent, he plays a prosecutor dealing with a complicated murder case involving a former colleague. These roles have marked an especially strong year for the 53-year-old actor, whose nuanced performances continue to gain recognition across film and television.

Sarsgaard’s acting journey began unexpectedly, leading him to early breakout roles in films like Dead Man Walking (1995), Boys Don’t Cry (1999), and Shattered Glass (2003), which brought him a Golden Globe nomination. Despite early descriptions of him as the “best supporting actor in the business,” his consistency has since proven him to be one of the finest actors of his generation. He’s shared the screen with acclaimed actresses such as Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine (2013), Natalie Portman in Jackie (2016), and Jessica Chastain in Memory (2023), the latter performance earning him Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.

Sarsgaard also spoke about his family ties within the industry. His wife, Maggie Gyllenhaal, directed him in The Lost Daughter (2021), while his brother-in-law, Jake Gyllenhaal, has been a co-star in multiple projects like Jarhead (2005) and Presumed Innocent (2023). Each collaboration, he noted, brought unique experiences and insights to his craft.

Beyond his more dramatic roles, Sarsgaard has explored the world of blockbuster cinema in films like Green Lantern (2011) and The Batman (2022). He’s also embraced the television format, earning critical acclaim in series like Hulu’s The Looming Tower (2018) and Dopesick (2021), which earned him an Emmy nomination. His dedication to complex, character-driven stories remains evident, as seen in his recent work.

With September 5 and Presumed Innocent, Peter Sarsgaard continues to impress with his dedication to layered storytelling and compelling character portrayals. As he reflects on his career trajectory, audiences can look forward to even more memorable performances from this seasoned actor.
