The Malayalam film industry, popularly known as Mollywood, has been in the spotlight recently due to revelations of sexual harassment faced by actresses, following the release of the Hema Committee report. This report, commissioned by the Kerala government, has brought to light numerous disturbing instances of abuse, some occurring on film sets and others linked to the casting couch phenomenon. Several prominent actors have been accused, and now, veteran actor Mammootty has finally broken his silence on the issue, calling for unity and supporting the ongoing reforms.

Mammootty Speaks Out After Prolonged Silence

Mammootty, a towering figure in Malayalam cinema, took to Facebook to express his thoughts on the Hema Committee report and the allegations of sexual harassment within the industry. The 72-year-old actor revealed that he had been waiting for the response of various industry organizations and leaders before commenting on the matter. Now, with a clear stance, he has welcomed the committee’s findings and called for collective action to implement the suggested reforms.

He emphasized the importance of all film industry associations standing together to ensure that the recommendations of the Hema Committee are put into practice. Mammootty stressed, “Filmmakers should be cautious to prevent anything untoward from happening. The time has come for all associations to stand united to implement the necessary changes.”

Support for Police Investigation and Judicial Process

Mammootty also urged everyone to allow the police to conduct their investigations without interference and to let the courts decide the appropriate punishment for those found guilty. He stated, “The police investigation is ongoing, and the full version of the Justice Hema Committee report is before the court. Let the police investigate honestly, and let the court decide the punishment. There is no ‘power center’ in the film industry.”

This statement comes as a clear message that the Malayalam superstar believes in the rule of law and the importance of due process. His words also suggest that no individual or group holds unchecked power within the industry, and that justice should prevail.

    Mammootty’s Call for Cinema’s Survival

In his message, Mammootty also touched upon the importance of the film industry’s survival, urging that the necessary reforms be implemented to ensure a safe and thriving environment for all. “If there are legal hurdles, then the recommendations of the Hema Committee report should be implemented. After all, cinema must survive,” he asserted.

His concern for the industry reflects his deep-rooted connection to Malayalam cinema and his desire to see it continue to flourish, free from the shadows of abuse and exploitation.

Mohanlal’s Earlier Remarks on the Report

Interestingly, Mammootty’s statement came just a day after fellow superstar Mohanlal also expressed his views on the Hema Committee report. Mohanlal had welcomed the report, having appeared before the committee twice, and urged people not to destroy the industry. He reiterated that while the report is necessary, it is crucial not to generalize the entire industry based on the actions of a few.

Mohanlal, who served as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for two terms, also emphasized that the entire industry cannot be held responsible for the misdeeds of individuals. “AMMA cannot answer all the questions. These questions should be asked to everyone. There are many people involved in this industry, but not everyone can be blamed,” he had said.

A United Front for a Better Industry

Mammootty’s call for unity and his support for the Hema Committee report underscore the need for systemic change in the Malayalam film industry. His stance, along with Mohanlal’s, sends a strong message that the industry is ready to confront its issues head-on and work towards a safer, more equitable environment for everyone involved.
