    Who is Nithya Sri Sivan?

Nithya Sri Sivan, a young para-badminton player from Hosur, Tamil Nadu, made India proud by winning a bronze medal in her debut at the Paris Paralympics. Born on July 1, 2005, into a middle-class family, Nithya grew up in a sports-friendly environment. Initially, she dreamed of becoming a cricketer, inspired by her brother, who played cricket at the district level. However, her path changed dramatically in 2016 when she watched the Rio Paralympics and became captivated by Lin Dan’s performance in badminton. This moment ignited her passion for the sport, and she decided to pursue badminton seriously.

    The Journey to Para Badminton

Interestingly, Nithya was unaware of para badminton until the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. During this period, she discovered the existence of the sport and was inspired to explore it further. It was then that she learned her father was a state-level para badminton player, and he played a crucial role in guiding her initial training. Under his mentorship, Nithya quickly developed her skills and started competing in state-level para badminton tournaments.

To hone her abilities, Nithya moved to Lucknow to train under Gaurav Khanna, the chief coach of the Indian Para Badminton team. This decision proved pivotal in her career, as it provided her with the professional coaching and exposure needed to excel in the sport.

    Achievements and Milestones

Nithya Sri Sivan has shown remarkable talent in para badminton since she began competing. In the Asian Para Games 2022, she won three bronze medals across women’s singles, mixed doubles, and women’s doubles. She continued her success by earning three bronze medals at the World Championship the same year and added another bronze medal at the World Championship this year.

Her performance at international events has also been commendable. Nithya secured one gold and one silver medal at the Four Nation Para Badminton International 2024, followed by another gold and silver at the Spanish Para Badminton tournament. These achievements have established her as a promising talent in the para badminton circuit.

Nithya’s achievements at such a young age are a source of inspiration, proving that with passion and dedication, one can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.
