Rajesh Khanna, often referred to as the first superstar of Indian cinema, left an indelible mark on Bollywood. His journey from a rising star to a legend is well-documented, but one intriguing story often goes unnoticed—the story of how he waived his fee for one of his most celebrated films, Anand.

    The Superstar Who Redefined Stardom

Rajesh Khanna dominated the Indian film industry between the 1970s and 1980s, setting records with 15 consecutive hits. During this golden period, he became the highest-paid actor, commanding enormous respect and admiration. However, despite his success, Khanna made an unconventional decision in 1971, when he chose to act in Anand without charging a single rupee.

    The Decision That Shocked Everyone

In an era where Rajesh Khanna’s name was synonymous with box office success, his decision to forgo his fee for Anand surprised many. But this choice was far from impulsive. According to film historian Dilip Thakur, Khanna’s decision was strategic and ultimately proved to be more rewarding than a traditional fee. Instead of accepting payment, Khanna asked for the distribution rights of Anand under his banner, Shaktiraj Films.

A Bold Move That Paid Off

Rajesh Khanna’s foresight turned out to be incredibly profitable. By securing the distribution rights, he earned ten times more than what he would have made from his usual acting fee. This decision not only showcased his business acumen but also highlighted his deep connection with the film. Anand, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, went on to become a cult classic, resonating with audiences across generations. Khanna’s portrayal of the terminally ill yet spirited Anand Sehgal remains one of his most memorable performances, solidifying his status as a legend in Indian cinema.

The Journey of Anand: From Script to Screen

Interestingly, Rajesh Khanna was not the original choice for the role of Anand. Hrishikesh Mukherjee initially approached Dharmendra and Kishore Kumar for the part. The director even narrated the script to Dharmendra during a flight from Chennai to Mumbai. However, circumstances led Mukherjee to cast Khanna, a decision that would later be hailed as one of the best in Bollywood history.

A Film Made in Record Time

Despite Khanna’s busy schedule, which saw him juggling multiple projects simultaneously, he made time for Anand. Mukherjee, recognizing Khanna’s dedication, managed to complete the entire shoot in just 28 days—a feat remarkable by any standard. The film not only captured the essence of life and death but also showcased the incredible chemistry between Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan, who played the role of Dr. Bhaskar, Anand’s close friend.

    The Legacy of Anand

Today, Anand is remembered as one of Bollywood’s most iconic films, with Rajesh Khanna’s performance etched in the hearts of millions. His decision to work without a fee, in exchange for distribution rights, is a testament to his love for cinema and his understanding of its potential. Khanna’s choice reflects a time when passion for the craft sometimes outweighed financial gain, and his legacy continues to inspire actors and filmmakers alike.

While Rajesh Khanna is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through films like Anand. His story serves as a reminder of the impact one can have when they believe in their work, and how sometimes, the greatest rewards come from taking risks and following one’s heart.
