India has achieved a remarkable milestone at the Paris Paralympics 2024, with Harvinder Singh making history by winning the gold medal in Men’s Recurve Archery. This victory not only marks his second Paralympic medal but also sets a new record for Indian archery. Harvinder’s achievement has increased India’s medal tally to 22 at this year’s Games.

A Historic Victory for Indian Archery

Harvinder Singh has etched his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the Paralympics or the Olympics. His journey to the top was nothing short of extraordinary. In the final match, Harvinder displayed exceptional skill and focus, defeating Poland’s Lukas Ciszek with a score of 6-0. This victory was the culmination of a series of impressive performances. In the semi-finals, he edged out Iran’s Mohammadreza Arab Ameri with a close 6-4 win. Earlier, in the quarter-finals, he defeated Indonesia’s Setiawan 6-2.

    Who is Harvinder Singh?

Born on February 25, 1991, in Kaithal, Haryana, Harvinder Singh comes from a humble farmer’s family. His journey into archery began after a life-changing incident. At the tender age of one and a half years, Harvinder was diagnosed with dengue. Unfortunately, the treatment he received had severe side effects, leading to a loss of functionality in his legs. Despite this setback, Harvinder developed a keen interest in archery after being inspired by the 2012 London Paralympics.

    Achievements and Recognition

Harvinder Singh first gained national attention when he won a gold medal in the individual category at the 2018 Asian Para Games. His success didn’t stop there; he went on to win a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games. His breakthrough moment on the global stage came at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where he won India’s first-ever bronze medal in archery.

In recognition of his achievements, Harvinder was honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2021, the second-highest sports award in India. The following year, he was awarded the Bhim Award, the highest sports honor given by the Haryana state government.

    Overcoming Adversity

Harvinder’s journey has been one of resilience and determination. Despite the challenges he faced due to his early illness, he pursued his passion for archery with dedication. His success at the Paris Paralympics is a testament to his hard work and perseverance.

As Harvinder Singh celebrates his historic gold medal, he continues to inspire millions across the country. His story is a shining example of how determination and passion can overcome even the most difficult challenges.
