In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the Indian men’s hockey team secured a commanding 5-1 victory against Japan in their second league match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 in Hulunbuir, China. This win marks India’s second consecutive win in the tournament, solidifying their position as strong contenders for the title.

    Early Dominance Sets the Tone

India came out strong right from the start, with Sukhjit Singh opening the scoring in just the second minute. The momentum continued as Abhishek doubled the lead in the very next minute, putting Japan on the back foot early in the game. Sanjay added a third goal in the 17th minute, giving India a comfortable lead going into halftime.

    Japan’s Effort Falls Short

Japan, struggling to keep up with India’s pace, managed to pull one back in the third quarter through Matsumoto Kazumasa in the 41st minute. Despite this, India’s defense remained solid, and Japan could not capitalize on their five penalty corners.

    Late Goals Seal the Win

India remained in control throughout the final quarter. Uttam Singh extended the lead to 4-1 in the 54th minute, with a well-executed play assisted by Mohammad Raheel and Jarmanpreet Singh. Sukhjit Singh rounded off the scoring in the final seconds of the match, securing his second goal and sealing India’s 5-1 victory.

    Looking Ahead

With this win, India continues to build momentum as they prepare to face Malaysia on Wednesday. The top four teams from the round-robin league will advance to the semi-finals, scheduled for September 16, with the final to be held on September 17. India, the defending champions, are in a strong position to retain their title.
