Syria Wins Intercontinental Cup, Defeats India 3-0

Syria claimed its first-ever Intercontinental Cup title with a 3-0 victory over India in Hyderabad. India, hoping to secure their third title in the tournament, struggled against the dominant Syrian side. Mahmoud Al Aswad opened the scoring early in the 7th minute, followed by Daleho Irandust’s goal in the 76th minute. The final blow came in the 96th minute when Pablo Sabbagh sealed the win.

This was a disappointing start for India’s new head coach Manolo Marquez, who took over in July. India had earlier drawn 0-0 against Mauritius, while Syria defeated Mauritius 2-0, finishing the tournament on top with six points. India and Mauritius managed just one point each.

Syria’s victory marks a historic moment for the West Asian nation, as it is their first title win on Indian soil. Despite having a history of competing in Indian tournaments, Syria had never secured a championship until now. Their previous attempts in the Nehru Cup finals in 2007 and 2009 ended in defeat. They also finished third in the 2019 Intercontinental Cup.

This victory is a major achievement for Syria, who last faced India in the Asian Cup in Qatar earlier this year, where they also secured a 1-0 win.
