As Bangladesh gears up for its much-anticipated Test series against India, significant changes have rocked the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). In a surprising move, former Bangladesh captain and key BCB figure Khalid Mahmud has resigned from his position as BCB director. Mahmud, who has been a central figure in Bangladesh cricket for over a decade, stepped down due to political shifts within the country that have impacted the board’s operations.

Khalid Mahmud’s Resignation Marks a Major Change

Khalid Mahmud’s resignation marks a significant shift in the BCB’s leadership. Since becoming a director in 2013, after defeating Gazi Ashraf Hussain in the BCB elections, Mahmud played a crucial role in the board’s activities. He served as the Sports Development Chairman and was instrumental in Bangladesh’s cricketing successes. One of his most notable achievements was overseeing the Bangladesh Under-19 team’s historic victory in the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2020, Bangladesh’s first and only ICC trophy to date.

    Political Changes Impacting BCB

Mahmud’s departure is not an isolated incident. It follows the resignation of former BCB president Nazmul Hasan, alongside other key figures such as Jalal Yunus, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, and Naimur Rahman. These resignations signal a broader reshuffling within the BCB, influenced by the ongoing political changes in Bangladesh.

    Upcoming India Series Amidst Turbulence

Despite the turbulence within the BCB, the Bangladesh cricket team is heading to India with high spirits after a 2-0 Test series win against Pakistan at home. The series, which begins on September 19, will see Bangladesh facing off against an Indian team currently leading in the World Test Championship. The Bangladesh team, emboldened by their recent success, will be looking to make a strong statement in India, despite the off-field challenges.
