The re-release trend in Bollywood is picking up steam, with several popular films returning to the big screen. Joining this lineup is the acclaimed horror-fantasy film Tumbbad, which is set to hit theaters again on 13 September 2024. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and starring Soham Shah, Tumbbad has built a loyal fanbase over the years, earning the status of a cult classic. The anticipation for the film’s return is evident, as it has already sold over 6,500 tickets on Book My Show within 24 hours, showing the film’s continuing appeal.

A Cult Favorite Finds New Life

First released in 2018, Tumbbad didn’t make a huge splash at the box office during its initial run, grossing just ₹13.6 crore. However, its unique storytelling, stunning visuals, and atmospheric horror have since earned it a dedicated fanbase. Written by Rahi Anil Barve, Mitesh Shah, Adesh Prasad, and Anand Gandhi, Tumbbad is set in a fictional village of the same name in Maharashtra. It follows the story of Vinayak Rao, played by Soham Shah, as he uncovers dark secrets in search of a hidden treasure.

    The Seven-Year Journey Behind Tumbbad

One of the most fascinating aspects of Tumbbad is the long and challenging process behind its making. The film took a staggering seven years to complete. The filmmakers aimed for authenticity, with many scenes set in real rain rather than relying on special effects. The story spans from 1918, following Vinayak Rao’s journey from his childhood to his treasure hunt 15 years later, where the supernatural horrors of the temple in Tumbbad come to life.

    Horror’s Popularity Boosts Tumbbad’s Chances

Horror films have seen a resurgence at the box office recently. Films like Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, have performed exceedingly well, proving the audience’s growing appetite for spooky and thrilling narratives. The success of Stree 2 and other horror films has raised hopes that Tumbbad’s re-release could also perform well. The film’s distinct blend of folklore, horror, and a gripping plot gives it the potential to draw in both returning fans and new audiences.

    Bollywood’s Re-Release Trend

Tumbbad isn’t the only film getting a second shot in cinemas. Bollywood has seen a recent trend of re-releasing classic films, and the list keeps growing. Films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and Maine Pyar Kiya have all been re-released, drawing in nostalgic viewers and introducing these films to a younger generation. This trend reflects the evolving viewing habits of audiences and the increasing value placed on cinematic experiences.

With Tumbbad poised to return to theaters, fans of the film can once again immerse themselves in the eerie world of this horror gem. The overwhelming ticket sales ahead of the re-release show that Tumbbad still has a strong hold over its audience.
