Test cricket, once considered the epitome of traditional, slow-paced cricket, has seen a transformation in recent years. With the rise of T20 cricket, players have adopted a more aggressive approach, even in the longest format of the game. Sixes, which were once rare in Tests, are now a regular feature as batsmen look to dominate bowlers. Here’s a look at the top five batsmen who have hit the most sixes in a calendar year in Test cricket.

    Adam Gilchrist – 22 Sixes (2005)

Adam Gilchrist was a game-changer for Australia, redefining the role of a wicketkeeper-batsman. Known for his attacking mindset, Gilchrist would often turn the tide of a match with his explosive batting in the middle order. In 2005, he smashed 22 sixes, a remarkable feat in Test cricket at the time. His ability to shift gears quickly made him a nightmare for bowlers.

    Virender Sehwag – 22 Sixes (2008)

Virender Sehwag was never one to play by the conventional rules. Known for his fearless approach, Sehwag didn’t differentiate much between formats. His strike rate in Test matches was over 80, and he treated bowlers with the same aggression as he would in a T20 game. In 2008, he hit 22 sixes, solidifying his reputation as one of the most destructive openers in Test cricket.

    Ben Stokes – 26 Sixes (2022)

Ben Stokes, the current England captain, is known for his all-round skills and aggressive leadership. In 2022, after taking on the role of captain, Stokes displayed an attacking brand of cricket that saw him hit 26 sixes in Test matches. His approach has played a huge role in transforming England’s Test cricket, allowing the team to play with more freedom and aggression.

    Yashasvi Jaiswal – 26 Sixes (2023)

India’s rising star, Yashasvi Jaiswal, has made a significant impact in the world of Test cricket in 2023. The young opener has already hit 26 sixes in Tests this year, putting him in joint second place on this prestigious list. With several more Test matches lined up for India this year, Jaiswal is on the brink of surpassing the current record for most sixes in a calendar year.

    Brendon McCullum – 33 Sixes (2014)

Brendon McCullum, New Zealand’s legendary batsman, holds the record for the most sixes in a calendar year in Test cricket. In 2014, McCullum smashed an incredible 33 sixes. Known for his fearless batting, McCullum was a pioneer in bringing an aggressive T20 mindset into Test cricket. His ability to score quickly, even in the longest format, remains unmatched.
