The first Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Galle witnessed an unexpected moment on the opening day as Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews was forced to retire hurt. After making a significant record in the ongoing match, Mathews had to leave the field due to an injury that was already troubling him, much to the concern of his team.

Mathews Walks Off After Scoring 12 Runs

Mathews, who has been an integral part of Sri Lanka’s Test side, had to leave the field while batting at 12 runs off 55 balls. His departure came during the 24th over, when Sri Lanka’s score stood at 69 for 2. The retirement hurt came as a blow to the Sri Lankan batting lineup, which had just started building momentum after a slow but steady start. The question that remains is how severe his injury is and whether he will be able to return to the field during the remainder of the Test.

Injury in Right Hand Finger Leads to His Exit

Interestingly, Angelo Mathews didn’t sustain the injury during the match. The injury in his right hand finger had been bothering him for some time, even before he walked out to bat. His discomfort was evident as he struggled at the crease, and when the pain became unbearable, Mathews decided to retire hurt. The decision to step off the field came at a crucial moment for Sri Lanka, as his experience in the middle order is vital for the team.

Mathews Makes History Before Retiring Hurt

Despite his early exit, Mathews had already etched his name in the record books before leaving the field. By stepping onto the ground for his 113th Test match, Mathews set a unique record. He became the cricketer to have played the most number of Tests at a single venue, making this his 30th Test match at Galle. This milestone surpasses the previous record held by England’s James Anderson, who played 29 Test matches at Lord’s.

Sri Lanka’s Start to the Galle Test

Sri Lanka, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, had a mixed start. Although they managed to score 88 runs by the end of the first session, New Zealand’s bowlers claimed two early wickets. Mathews’ departure added to the team’s woes, leaving Sri Lanka in a tricky situation early in the match. The team will now be hoping for a strong recovery from the middle and lower order to stabilize their innings.

Mathews’ potential absence for a longer duration could be a serious concern for Sri Lanka as they look to capitalize on the home conditions in this series against New Zealand.
