Ratan Tata, the iconic industrialist who recently passed away at 86, was not just a giant in the business world but also a quiet yet powerful force behind Indian cricket. While Tata is celebrated for his philanthropic efforts and for growing India’s industrial footprint, his love for cricket played a crucial role in shaping the careers of many Indian cricketers. Several cricketers, some of whom went on to win World Cups for India, benefited from Tata’s financial support and the resources offered by Tata Group companies.

Financial Support and Job Opportunities for Indian Cricketers

In the earlier days of Indian cricket, financial backing and infrastructure were huge hurdles for many talented players. The Tata Group, through various companies like Air India, Tata Steel, and Tata Motors, provided jobs and financial assistance to budding cricketers. This support was not just a job; it was a pathway that helped many players concentrate on their cricket without worrying about their livelihood.

World Cup Heroes Backed by Tata

Some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, who later became World Cup champions, have been associated with the Tata Group:

    • Mohinder Amarnath, a hero of the 1983 World Cup and vice-captain of the Indian team, played for Air India, which was part of the Tata ecosystem.
    • The Tata Group also played a role in the careers of Farooq Engineer and Rusi Surti, who were supported by Tata Motors and Indian Hotels Company Limited.

Apart from these, cricketers like Sanjay Manjrekar, VVS Laxman, and Robin Uthappa were also part of the Air India cricket team, receiving not only financial backing but also a platform to showcase their talent.

The 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup Heroes

The Tata Group’s role wasn’t limited to earlier decades. During the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, cricketers who had been supported by Tata’s companies played key roles:

    • Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Mohammad Kaif were part of Indian Airlines, another Tata-associated company.
    • Ajit Agarkar, a member of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team, was supported by Tata Steel.

Yuvraj and Harbhajan, in particular, were instrumental in India’s success in the 2011 World Cup. Yuvraj’s all-round performances were pivotal in winning the tournament, and Harbhajan’s spin bowling was crucial in key matches.

Continuing the Legacy: Supporting Today’s Stars

The Tata Group’s involvement in Indian cricket continues even today. Current players like Shardul Thakur (supported by Tata Power) and Jayant Yadav (backed by Air India) have benefited from the Tata Group’s commitment to sports development.

The Tata Group’s deep connection with cricket is also reflected in its association with IPL sponsorships, underscoring Ratan Tata’s passion for supporting the sport at every level.

    Ratan Tata’s Quiet Influence

While many may not be aware of Tata’s contributions to cricket, his silent and steady support has played a key role in helping Indian cricketers shine on the international stage. Through jobs, financial assistance, and providing the necessary resources, Ratan Tata and his companies created opportunities that allowed many cricketers to focus entirely on their game and perform at their best for the country.

His love for cricket and contribution to sports will always be remembered as an important chapter in Indian cricket history.
