In a significant moment for Special Olympics India, Dr. Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics India, recently unveiled the new jersey for athletes participating in the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling competition. This prestigious event will take place in New Delhi and promises to bring athletes from across the world together for an inspiring celebration of sportsmanship.

The competition will focus on athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) aged 22 and above. It marks the first time India has hosted an international Special Olympics event for senior athletes, offering a platform for those whose participation in sports tends to decrease with age. Over 100 athletes from 12 countries, representing regions such as East Asia, Europe, and Asia Pacific, will be participating in this unique event.

The collaboration with the Tenpin Federation of India has also added a historic element to the event by including bowling as a competitive sport, a first for Special Olympics India.

Dr. Mallika Nadda’s Vision for Special Olympics India

Dr. Mallika Nadda expressed her excitement about the competition, emphasizing the importance of the event not just in terms of sports but as a celebration of determination and the human spirit. “This competition is more than just sports; it is about showcasing the power of courage, resilience, and unity. We are proud to have Shivani as our Athlete Ambassador, and we believe this event will create lasting memories for athletes, families, and supporters alike,” said Dr. Nadda.

She further invited everyone to join this incredible journey, saying, “We will witness stories of triumph and friendship, highlighting the greatness that emerges when we come together to support each other.”

Shivani: A True Role Model for Athletes with Disabilities

Shivani, a celebrated cyclist and three-time gold medalist in the Summer Olympics, has been named the Athlete Ambassador for Special Olympics India. Speaking at the event, Shivani expressed her pride and excitement about this new role. “I am honored to be the Athlete Ambassador for Special Olympics India. Sports have transformed my life, showing me that with dedication and belief, anything is achievable,” she said.

As the brand ambassador, Shivani hopes to inspire individuals with intellectual disabilities to pursue their dreams. “I want to encourage everyone to never give up, no matter the challenges they face. Sports have the power to help us overcome adversity and unlock our true potential.”

Why the Special Olympics India Event is a Milestone

Special Olympics India is a recognized national sports federation dedicated to supporting athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities. Approved by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and affiliated with the global Special Olympics International Committee, the organization is committed to creating opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sports and development programs across India.

The Special Olympics is a worldwide inclusion movement, using sports, education, health, and leadership programs to fight discrimination and empower people with intellectual disabilities. This global initiative works tirelessly to promote equality and inclusion, creating opportunities for people with disabilities to thrive in all areas of life.

The upcoming Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling competition in New Delhi is a significant milestone in this ongoing effort, offering senior athletes from across the globe a chance to shine on the international stage.
