Agni Chopra, the young and talented son of filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is making waves in the cricketing world. Playing for Mizoram in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, the 25-year-old left-handed batter has shown phenomenal form. His consistent performance, highlighted by multiple centuries and double tons, has made him one of the leading run-scorers this season. With 646 runs in just 5 innings at an average of 161.5, Agni has become the talk of the town, pushing hard for a spot in Team India.

    Agni’s Remarkable Form This Season

In the latest Ranji Trophy Plate Group match between Mizoram and Manipur, Agni smashed 218 runs off 269 balls, including 29 fours and a six. This was his second consecutive double century, following his unbeaten 238-run knock against Arunachal Pradesh. Agni has been leading the batting charts, making big runs in every match.

So far this season, Agni has recorded:

    • 2 Double Centuries
    • 1 Century
    • 1 Half-Century

His ability to score across different innings shows his consistency and hunger for runs.

A Dream Start to First-Class Career

Agni Chopra made his first-class debut in January 2024 against Sikkim. Since then, he has played 8 matches and scored 1367 runs from 16 innings, averaging 91.13. This tally does not include his recent 218-run knock against Manipur. With 7 centuries and 4 half-centuries already to his name, Agni’s journey in first-class cricket has been nothing short of spectacular.

His strike rate of 98.55 reflects his aggressive intent, a valuable trait for modern cricket. In just a short span, Agni has become one of the most promising talents in domestic cricket.

Agni’s Century and Double Century Against Arunachal Pradesh

In an earlier match against Arunachal Pradesh, Agni delivered one of the most memorable performances of the season.

    • First Innings: Scored 110 runs off 138 balls, including 19 boundaries.
    • Second Innings: Played a marathon knock of 238* off 209 balls with 33 fours and 5 sixes, lifting his team from a precarious 2/1 to a commanding position.

This game underlined his ability to handle pressure and build innings across different phases.

    Beating Bradman’s Legacy in Average

Though comparisons with the legendary Don Bradman may seem premature, Agni’s numbers in this season are impressive. His current average of 161.5 in Ranji Trophy exceeds Bradman’s iconic first-class career average of 95.14. While it’s early days, Agni’s performances are drawing attention from fans and selectors alike.

Eyeing a Spot in Team India

With Indian cricket looking for young, consistent batters, Agni Chopra’s form puts him on the radar for higher honors. His ability to perform in multiple innings and score big runs has created a buzz. If he continues in the same vein, it won’t be long before he knocks on the doors of Team India.

Agni’s cricketing journey is a perfect example of how passion and hard work can pave the way, irrespective of one’s background. While he may be the son of a renowned filmmaker, Agni is carving his own path in the world of cricket.
