Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, one of India’s most skilled hockey forwards, has officially announced his retirement from international hockey. The 31-year-old player confirmed the news through a heartfelt post on social media, marking the end of a remarkable journey that saw him rise from a small village to the Olympic podium twice.
Upadhyay, who played 183 matches for the Indian men’s team and scored 67 international goals, made his final appearance on 15 June 2025, against Australia during the FIH Pro League in Europe. He featured in 4 of the 8 matches India played in the 2024-25 season.
Though he steps away from the international stage, Lalit confirmed that he will continue to play in domestic and league competitions. His career reflects years of hard work, setbacks, and glorious comebacks that made him a fan favourite across the country.
From Small Village to Olympic Glory
In his emotional farewell post, Lalit recalled how his journey began in a small village with limited resources but big dreams. His story is one of persistence and triumph. From surviving a sting operation controversy in the early phase of his career to winning bronze medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, his path was never easy.
He wrote, “After 26 years, becoming an Olympian from my city is something I will always keep close to my heart with respect and gratitude.”
Heartfelt Thanks to His Mentors and Supporters
Lalit took the opportunity to thank those who supported him along the way. He remembered his first coach Parmanand Mishra, who introduced him to hockey, and coach Harendra Singh, who gave him his first big break at Air India. He also showed gratitude to Sameer Bhai and Dhanraj Pillay, who mentored him during difficult times.
He appreciated BPCL for giving him eight meaningful years of employment and development and thanked Hockey India for giving him the honour of wearing the Indian jersey.
Currently working as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Uttar Pradesh, he acknowledged the state government for giving him this opportunity and honouring his achievements.
