Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Dropped Catches Hurt India in Leeds Test

India faced a tough defeat in the first Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds. England won the game by 5 wickets with 84 balls left on the final day. While India had a strong start with the bat, their efforts were undone by missed fielding chances, mostly from Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The young opener had a forgettable outing in the field. He dropped four simple catches across both innings, which proved costly for Team India. These drops helped England’s batters score big runs and build partnerships that pushed India out of the game.

Jaiswal Sets Unwanted Record in Test History

Yashasvi Jaiswal has now made an unwanted record—dropping the most catches in a single Test innings by an Indian player. Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane held this record after dropping three catches in a 2019 Test against Bangladesh.

Jaiswal’s dropped catches helped England turn the match in their favour. His first miss came in the first innings when Ben Duckett was on just 11 runs. After getting that lifeline, Duckett went on to score 62 runs.

The second drop came when Oli Pope was on 60. He went on to score 106 runs. Later, Jaiswal dropped Harry Brook on 83, and Brook made 99 runs. In the second innings, Jaiswal again dropped Ben Duckett, this time when he was on 97. Duckett capitalised again, scoring a match-winning 149.

India’s Missed Opportunities Shift the Game

India’s bowlers gave it their all, especially in the second session of the final day when they picked four wickets quickly. But by then, the match had already tilted in England’s favour. The repeated fielding errors made it hard for the team to build pressure.

Ben Duckett’s solid 149-run knock and Oli Pope’s century were both made possible because of missed chances. The Indian team struggled to capitalise on these key moments, which ultimately impacted the match result.

This loss has raised concerns about fielding standards, especially in Test cricket, where momentum shifts quickly. Jaiswal, although a promising batsman, needs to work on his fielding under pressure, especially in long-format matches.
