While today’s singers like Arijit Singh, Jubin Nautiyal, and Shreya Ghoshal are celebrated for their voices and demand high fees for their recordings, it’s important to remember the pioneers who paved the way. One such legend is Gauhar Jaan, the very first Indian singer to have her voice recorded on gramophone in 1902. Her legacy not only left a mark on Indian music but also made her one of the most iconic figures of her time.

    Who Was Gauhar Jaan?

Born in 1873 in Azamgarh, Gauhar Jaan was a singer who took Indian classical music to new heights. Her talents were unmatched, and her ability to sing in multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Persian, French, and English, made her stand out. Her first recording on gramophone happened in 1902, marking the beginning of India’s recorded music era. Over her lifetime, she recorded more than 600 songs, earning her the title of “Queen of Gramophone”.

A Journey from Royal Gatherings to Public Fame

Gauhar Jaan was well-known among the royalty, frequently performing in the courts of kings and emperors. These exclusive performances were mostly out of reach for the common public. However, thanks to gramophone technology, her magical voice became accessible to the general public. Her recorded songs quickly gained popularity, cementing her as a household name.

    Gauhar Jaan’s Impressive Fees

In a time when gold was valued at Rs 20 per tola, Gauhar Jaan was paid an astonishing Rs 3,000 per song recording—a huge sum for that era. Her remarkable talent and fame allowed her to demand this hefty fee, which even prompted the British government to step in and suggest a reduction. However, Gauhar Jaan remained firm in her choices, performing only on her own terms.

    Lavish Lifestyle and Unforgettable Legacy

Gauhar Jaan’s life of luxury was the talk of the town. She was known for arriving at recording sessions adorned in exquisite jewelry, and it was said she never repeated her outfits for any of her 600 recordings. Her collection of luxury cars and royal buggies further highlighted her extravagant lifestyle. She even traveled in her own private train for performances, which showcased her stature and influence during her time.

The Tragic End of a Grand Life

Despite her fame and opulence, Gauhar Jaan’s life ended on a somber note. She spent her final days in relative isolation, with little known about her funeral or where she was buried. This stark contrast between her glorious life and lonely death remains a poignant chapter in her story.

Gauhar Jaan will always be remembered as a trailblazer in Indian music, a woman whose voice and impact continue to inspire generations of artists. Her journey from royal gatherings to being the first recorded singer in India is a story that remains timeless.
