Renowned for his powerful performances on both the big screen and OTT platforms, Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently shared some fascinating insights into his journey from aspiring to be a sanyasi to becoming one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema. During a candid conversation in Delhi, Nawazuddin reflected on his early days, his experiences in the film industry, and his deep connection with the city.

The Journey from Dharamshala to the Big Screen

Before Nawazuddin became a household name, he had different aspirations. He revealed that before venturing into acting, he seriously considered becoming a sanyasi. After leaving his hometown of Muzaffarnagar, he found himself in Dharamshala, where he stayed for a few days to dedicate his life to spirituality. However, fate had other plans. The calling to the world of acting came unexpectedly when he was introduced to theatre. This new passion for performing arts captivated him, making him realize that acting was something he could do for the rest of his life without getting bored.

Embracing Theatre and the Allure of Acting

Nawazuddin’s first brush with acting happened when he stumbled upon theatre. The immediacy and intensity of live performances, where the audience’s reaction was instant and unfiltered, drew him in. The idea that he could evoke emotions, whether praise or criticism, from a live audience, was exhilarating. Unlike his previous jobs, which left him feeling unfulfilled, acting provided a sense of purpose and excitement. This realization set him on a path that would eventually lead to his successful career in Bollywood.

    A Deep Connection with Delhi

Having spent a significant amount of time in Delhi, Nawazuddin has fond memories of the city. He nostalgically recalled the small joys, like savouring the famous Bhaturas of Bengali Market and the biryani of Nizamuddin, which he still craves whenever he visits. Delhi holds a special place in his heart, not just for its food but also for the countless memories he created there.

One particular incident from his Delhi days stands out in his memory. During a visit to the city for a shoot, a female friend had come to meet him. They decided to sit in a park, and in a moment of spontaneity, Nawazuddin placed his hand on hers. The reaction from his friend, who quickly pulled away and chastised him, left him feeling embarrassed and remorseful. This incident taught him an important lesson about boundaries and consent, one that he still remembers vividly.

Nawazuddin’s Preference for the Big Screen

Despite the growing popularity of OTT platforms, Nawazuddin confessed that his heart still belongs to the big screen. He has only appeared in one web series, Sacred Games, and prefers the experience of watching and working in films. However, he acknowledges the advantages of OTT, especially the convenience it offers viewers to watch content at their own pace. While the cinema experience remains unparalleled for him, he appreciates the broader reach that digital platforms provide.

    The Magic of Returning Home

Nawazuddin also spoke about the comforting experience of returning to his village. The familiar sights and sounds, the childhood memories that resurface, and the simple pleasure of reconnecting with old friends make each visit special. Despite the changes that time has brought, the essence of his village remains the same, offering him a sense of peace and belonging that is hard to find elsewhere.
