Despite being the son of a celebrated director, Varun made his debut in Karan Johar’s blockbuster film Student of the Year instead of being launched by his father. The actor spoke about this at the trailer launch event of his niece Anjini Dhawan’s debut film Binny and Family.
No Family Tradition of Launching Careers
Varun explained that his family doesn’t follow the tradition of launching each other’s careers. He said, “She is my niece, but I am here like an elder brother… It is a good film, so I am here. Like my father never launched me, because there is no such tradition in my family, he does not believe in it.” Varun emphasized that any success Anjini achieves is entirely due to her own efforts, and it wouldn’t be right for him to claim any credit for her accomplishments.
Proud of Anjini’s Journey
The actor expressed pride in Anjini’s hard work and the path she has carved out for herself in the industry. Binny and Family, directed by Sanjay Tripathi, tells the story of three generations and the challenges they face in their relationships. Anjini Dhawan takes on the role of Binny in this film, which is produced by Mahaveer Jain Films and Wave Band Productions. The film is set to hit theaters on September 20, and Varun’s presence at the trailer launch signifies his support for his niece’s endeavors.

During the promotion for Student of the Year, Varun shared with PTI that David Dhawan neither discouraged nor pushed him to pursue acting. “He told me to become what I want. As a father, he supported me at every step of life and gave me all the things and comfort that I needed,” Varun recalled. This support, however, did not extend to launching Varun’s film career, as David Dhawan believed in his son finding his own way.
