Streaming giant Netflix is under investigation by the Indian government, with allegations ranging from visa violations to tax evasion and racial discrimination. These charges, outlined in a government email, have raised concerns about the platform’s business practices in India.
Visa and Tax Violations at the Center of the Probe
The investigation became public after an email sent by Deepak Yadav, an official from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), surfaced. Addressed to Nandini Mehta, Netflix India’s former Director of Business and Legal Affairs, the email listed concerns about visa compliance, tax evasion, and other irregularities.
The email stated, “We have received details related to visa violations, illegal structures, tax evasion, and racial discrimination connected with Netflix’s operations in India.” The FRRO, which monitors visa adherence and works with various government agencies, did not disclose which bodies are involved in the investigation, but the probe covers several alleged business malpractices.
Netflix’s Response and Mehta’s Involvement
In response to these allegations, a Netflix spokesperson said the company was unaware of any investigation by the Indian government. However, the timing of the investigation coincides with a lawsuit filed in the U.S. by Nandini Mehta, who left Netflix in 2020. Mehta accused the company of wrongful termination and racial and gender discrimination, charges Netflix has denied.
Mehta has expressed support for the Indian government’s investigation, although she did not provide further details regarding specific allegations. Her role at Netflix, where she worked in both Los Angeles and Mumbai, has placed her at the center of the probe, with Indian authorities requesting her cooperation by sharing relevant documents and information.
