BCCI Meeting: Key Decisions and the Race for the New Secretary

The 93rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to take place this Sunday. While many key issues are on the agenda, the appointment of a new secretary is not one of them. The current BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, will remain in his role until he takes over as ICC chairman on December 1, but discussions around potential candidates to succeed him are likely to take place informally.

The ICC Representation and Secretary Discussion

One of the central discussions at the AGM will be about the selection of India’s representatives at the ICC meetings. Jay Shah has been representing India in ICC meetings ever since Sourav Ganguly’s term as BCCI president ended. With Shah’s imminent move to the ICC chairmanship, it remains unclear whether current BCCI Chairman Roger Binny will step in as the alternate director or if someone new will be appointed.

However, the search for the next BCCI Secretary is already sparking interest, with two leading names being considered: Anil Patel, Secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, and Rohan Jaitley, President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association. Both are seen as strong candidates, but there’s speculation that Patel has the edge in the race. Additionally, there are talks of BCCI Treasurer Ashish Shelar and Joint Secretary Devjit Saikia being promoted to higher roles.

Appointment of a New IPL Governing Council Member

Apart from the secretary race, the AGM will confirm the appointment of a new representative from the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) to the IPL Governing Council (GC). According to reports, former Andhra player and experienced administrator V Chamundeswarnath is expected to continue in this position. Additionally, two other members from the general body will be nominated to the IPL GC. At present, IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya hold these roles, and they are expected to remain in their positions for at least one more season.

    Changes in ICA Leadership

In addition to the IPL GC discussions, the meeting will also see a change in leadership for the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA). Former Test cricketer Yajurvindra Singh, who represented Maharashtra and Saurashtra, is set to take over as ICA President following the passing of former Indian opener Anshuman Gaikwad. This leadership change is expected to bring new energy to the ICA’s initiatives.

Other Key Points on the AGM Agenda

The BCCI AGM will also tackle several other important topics, including the approval of the annual budget for the year 2024-2025. The meeting will discuss the report submitted by the Internal Committee on Sexual Harassment Prevention, a matter that has been gaining more attention across Indian sports bodies. Additionally, the appointment of sub-committees and membership confirmations for the ICA will also be addressed.

As the BCCI continues to navigate its internal dynamics and plan for the future, this AGM promises to be a crucial meeting for Indian cricket’s governance.
