In a surprising turn of events, Mumbai’s renowned Khar Gymkhana club has canceled the honorary membership of Indian women’s cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues. This decision stems from allegations against her father, Ivan Rodrigues, who was accused by some club members of using the premises for unauthorized religious activities, which reportedly violated the club’s rules.

Members claim that these events, associated with an organization called “Brother Manuel Ministries,” involved activities that some felt bordered on conversion attempts.
According to Khar Gymkhana officials, Ivan allegedly hosted around 35 events during this time. These claims were raised during the club’s Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) on October 20, 2024, where the decision to revoke Jemimah’s honorary membership was finalized.
Violation of Club Rules
The club has strict rules regarding religious activities on its premises, as per its bylaws. Rule 4A of Khar Gymkhana’s constitution explicitly prohibits any religious activity within the club. During the investigation, former club president Nitin Gadekar and other members reportedly observed unusual proceedings during one of these events. They described a dimly lit room, trance music playing, and speeches invoking religious sentiments. This discovery further fueled the club’s decision to cancel the Rodrigues family’s membership.

Vivek Devnani, the president of Khar Gymkhana, confirmed the membership cancellation. He emphasized that the decision was made based on the AGM’s resolution, which was passed after detailed discussions and deliberation.
Shiv Malhotra, a member of the Khar Gymkhana Management Committee, added that the club was unaware of the nature of the events taking place in the hall until complaints arose. Once the matter was brought to light, the management took swift action in accordance with the club’s regulations.
