A significant moment in Bangladesh cricket is expected during the ongoing T20 series between India and Bangladesh. Veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah is set to bid farewell to T20 International cricket after a long and illustrious career. The 38-year-old cricketer, who has been a pivotal figure for Bangladesh, is likely to announce his retirement during this series, marking the end of his 14-year journey in the shortest format.

Mahmudullah to Retire After Series Against India

Reports suggest that Mahmudullah, a key player for Bangladesh, will officially retire from T20 Internationals after the ongoing three-match series against India. The second match of the series is scheduled for October 9 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, while the final match will take place on October 12 in Hyderabad, which is likely to be Mahmudullah’s last appearance in T20 cricket.

According to sources within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the all-rounder has decided to call time on his T20 career. A BCB official reportedly told The Daily Star, “Mahmudullah has made up his mind to close the T20 International chapter. He is set to announce his retirement during this series.” This news comes as no surprise, as Mahmudullah had already hinted at this decision before the series began.

    Captain Shanto’s Remarks Fuel Speculation

Bangladesh’s T20 captain, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, had also hinted at Mahmudullah’s possible retirement before the start of the series. He mentioned that the senior player would have a discussion with the selectors regarding his future in the format. “This series is very important for Mahmudullah Bhai,” Shanto said, adding that there would be discussions about his future with the board.

    Mahmudullah’s Impact on Bangladesh Cricket

Mahmudullah made his T20 debut for Bangladesh in 2007 and has since played 139 matches, scoring 2,395 runs at a strike rate of 117.74. In addition to his contributions with the bat, he has also claimed 40 wickets. Known for his calm behavior and match-winning performances, he has been a consistent performer for Bangladesh across all formats. While he retired from Test cricket in 2021, he continues to be a vital part of the ODI squad.

Final Match of a Glorious Career

With the last match of the India-Bangladesh T20 series scheduled for October 12, all eyes will be on Mahmudullah as he potentially takes the field for the final time in T20 Internationals. While he will step away from the shortest format, his contribution to Bangladesh cricket will remain etched in the memories of fans and teammates alike.

As one of Bangladesh’s most experienced cricketers, Mahmudullah’s departure will leave a void in the team. However, he is expected to continue playing in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and will likely play a crucial role in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup.
