Team India, currently in Chennai for their two-Test series against Bangladesh, has a new addition to the squad — former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel. The 39-year-old veteran has been appointed as India’s bowling coach, a role he steps into with vast international experience and a proven track record. His appointment was largely recommended by Gautam Gambhir, who has closely observed Morkel’s coaching skills during their time in the IPL.

A Strong Coaching Career Built on Global Experience

Morkel’s transition from being a player to a coach has been swift and impactful. After retiring from international cricket, he shifted to coaching and has worked with several top teams globally. One of his most notable coaching stints was with the Pakistan national team. However, during his time with Pakistan, the team’s performance was less than satisfactory, as they failed to make it to the knockout rounds in the last ODI World Cup. Despite that, Morkel’s coaching career has seen him work in top-level leagues and international teams.

IPL Experience and Close Bond with Gambhir

Morne Morkel has made a significant impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He served as the bowling coach for Lucknow Super Giants, led by KL Rahul. His association with Gautam Gambhir, who was the mentor of the Lucknow team, gave Gambhir firsthand knowledge of Morkel’s abilities as a coach. Gambhir, impressed by Morkel’s methods, was instrumental in pushing for his appointment as Team India’s bowling coach. In addition to the IPL, Morkel has worked with teams like Durban Super Giants and Namibia. He was also associated with the New Zealand women’s team during the T20 World Cup in South Africa.

    Morne Morkel’s Glorious Cricketing Career

Before becoming a renowned coach, Morne Morkel had an illustrious playing career for South Africa. He was known for his lethal pace and accuracy, making him one of the best fast bowlers of his generation. He played in 86 Test matches, where he took an impressive 309 wickets. In ODIs, he grabbed 188 wickets from 117 matches, and in the shorter T20 format, he claimed 47 wickets in 44 matches.

Morkel’s extensive experience as a fast bowler, along with his global coaching expertise, promises to be a valuable asset for Team India as they prepare for the upcoming series. His inclusion comes at a crucial time, and expectations are high for him to contribute to India’s success on the field.
