After a historic win against India in Bengaluru, New Zealand captain Tom Latham is not getting carried away. Despite his team taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series, Latham knows India can bounce back strongly in the upcoming second Test. New Zealand will face India again from October 24 in Pune, and the Kiwis are preparing to maintain their focus.

This victory was only New Zealand’s third Test win on Indian soil, the last one coming 36 years ago, in 1988. Latham called the Bengaluru win a proud moment for the team and shared that it will be celebrated, but he quickly emphasized the importance of staying grounded.

“We know how strong India is, and we’re ready for their response. It’s not going to be easy in the second Test,” Latham said, praising his bowlers for their efforts in the first match. He highlighted the contribution of William O’Rourke, Matt Henry, and Tim Southee, who collectively kept pressure on India’s batting lineup throughout the match.

New Zealand’s pace trio was instrumental in the first Test. They restricted India’s runs and made sure the target remained manageable for their team. Latham praised the bowling unit, especially the crucial spell with the new ball on the fourth day.

Another key moment was the eighth-wicket partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Southee. Their 137-run stand ensured New Zealand gained a commanding lead, which ultimately helped the team secure an easy chase of a modest target on the final day.

“Rachin and Tim’s partnership was pivotal. If someone had told us we’d only have to chase around 100 runs on the fifth day, we’d have been very pleased,” Latham added.

Kane Williamson Could Return for Second Test

As New Zealand prepares for the second Test, the possibility of star batter Kane Williamson returning to the lineup is a major talking point. Williamson missed the first Test due to a groin injury, but Latham expressed hope that the veteran batsman could be back for the Pune match.

“We’ll have discussions in the next 24-48 hours about Kane. His return would be a huge boost for us. Hopefully, he’s fit and ready to go,” said Latham.

With the first Test win giving them momentum, New Zealand will aim to build on their lead. However, Latham remains cautious, recognizing India’s potential for a strong comeback in familiar conditions.

The second Test promises to be a challenging contest as both teams gear up for another intense battle on the field.
