The ongoing Chennai Test match between India and Bangladesh has brought a surprising turn of events for Team India’s captain, Rohit Sharma. Despite India’s strong position in the game, Rohit faced a tough time with the bat, creating an unusual record that Indian cricket has not witnessed in the last 16 years.

    Rohit’s Struggle in Both Innings

In the first two days of the Chennai Test, India’s bowling attack dominated the Bangladeshi side, bowling them out for just 149 runs in their first innings. However, when it came to batting, Rohit Sharma couldn’t deliver his usual performance. In the first innings, he was dismissed for just 6 runs off 19 balls, followed by another early exit in the second innings, where he scored only 5 runs off 7 balls.

This unfortunate performance placed Rohit Sharma in an unwanted list, becoming the first Indian captain in 16 years to be dismissed for single-digit scores in both innings of a home Test match.

A First for Rohit Since 2015

What makes this incident more surprising is that this is the first time since 2015 that Rohit has been dismissed for single digits in both innings of a home Test. It’s also only the fourth time in his career that Rohit has failed to score in double digits in both innings of a Test match. The last time he had such a performance was in 2023, during a Test match in South Africa.

    Rohit’s Struggles Against Bangladesh Continue

Rohit Sharma’s struggles against Bangladesh in Test cricket seem to persist. This is his fourth Test match against Bangladesh, and in these matches, he has managed to score only 44 runs at a low average of 8.80. Out of the four innings he has played against Bangladesh, he has been dismissed for single digits four times, with his highest score being just 21 runs. This is definitely not the form Rohit would have hoped for in this series.

Team India Takes Control Despite Rohit’s Form

Despite Rohit’s personal struggles with the bat, Team India is in a commanding position in the Chennai Test. After posting a solid total of 376 runs in their first innings, India’s bowlers quickly dismantled the Bangladesh batting order, dismissing them for a mere 149 runs, giving India a lead of 227 runs.

As the second innings progressed, India ended the second day with a score of 81/3, extending their lead to 308 runs. With the Indian bowlers in fine form and a significant lead, India looks set to maintain their stronghold in the match, despite their captain’s struggles.

In conclusion, while Rohit Sharma’s rare underperformance has created an unusual record in Indian cricket, the team’s overall strength and dominant position in the game ensure that they are still on course for victory in the Chennai Test.
