On a dramatic second day of the Irani Trophy, Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan played a remarkable innings, scoring an unbeaten 221 runs. His double century not only anchored Mumbai’s innings but also marked a historic milestone. No other Mumbai player has ever scored a double century while representing the team in the Irani Cup. The innings helped Mumbai post a strong total of 536/9 against Rest of India.

    Sarfaraz Khan’s Historic Double Century

Sarfaraz Khan’s knock was a masterclass of endurance and skill, especially considering Mumbai’s tough start to the innings. At one point, Mumbai was struggling at 37/3, and the pressure was mounting. However, Sarfaraz, known for his attacking yet balanced style, turned the game around with his fearless batting. He displayed brilliant form throughout, smashing 25 boundaries and 4 sixes. Facing a total of 188 balls, Sarfaraz kept the scoreboard ticking, scoring 167 runs on Day 2 alone.

Sarfaraz also found strong support in off-spinner Tanush Kotian. The two built a crucial 183-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Kotian contributed with a solid 64 runs, facing 124 balls. This partnership was key in pushing Mumbai to a competitive total.

Shardul Thakur’s Brave Effort Despite High Fever

While Sarfaraz’s innings was the highlight, all-rounder Shardul Thakur’s fight against illness added a dramatic twist to the day. Thakur, who was showing symptoms of fever on the first day, took to the field on the second day despite his deteriorating health. It was later revealed that he was battling a 102°F fever while batting.

Thakur, known for his gritty performances, played an important knock of 36 runs, hitting one six and four boundaries in his 59-ball innings. His health, however, worsened during the game, forcing him to take breaks for medical attention. Despite the discomfort, Thakur continued batting for two hours before he was eventually dismissed.

After his innings, the Mumbai team management decided to take him to the hospital for further tests. Reports suggested that doctors were monitoring him for potential illnesses like malaria and dengue. His participation in the remaining days of the match will depend on his recovery.

Mumbai’s Strong Comeback After Early Wickets

The Mumbai team had a shaky start, losing three wickets early in their innings. With the score at just 37/3, veteran Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer led a mini-recovery. Rahane was on the brink of a century but fell for 97, caught by Dhruv Jurel off the bowling of Yash Dayal.

Shreyas Iyer also contributed with a half-century before being dismissed, and the team was at 137/4 when Sarfaraz came to the crease. His and Rahane’s 131-run stand turned the game in Mumbai’s favor, allowing them to recover from the early damage.

By the close of play on Day 2, Mumbai had posted a commanding total of 536/9. Mukesh Kumar was the pick of the bowlers for Rest of India, taking four wickets, while Yash Dayal and Prasidh Krishna chipped in with two wickets each.

    Day 3: What’s Next?

As Mumbai’s innings comes to a close, all eyes will be on Sarfaraz Khan, who is poised to add more runs to his tally on Day 3. Additionally, Shardul Thakur’s health will be closely monitored, and fans hope to see him back on the field if he recovers in time.

With Mumbai already in a strong position, the Rest of India will need to bring their best performance to stay in the contest.
