In a recent episode of Jeopardy, host Ken Jennings found himself in an unexpected position when a question’s wording appeared somewhat outdated. The clue, part of the “Complete the Rhyming Phrase” category, asked contestants to finish the saying, “Men seldom make passes at…,” with the answer being “girls who wear glasses.”
While this phrase from poet Dorothy Parker was popular decades ago, it sparked discomfort on the show. The awkwardness intensified since Heather Ryan, one of the contestants attempting the answer, was wearing glasses herself. Recognizing the situation, Jennings quickly stepped in, labeling the clue “a little problematic” and adding an apology, “Sorry, Heather.” Another contestant, Will Wallace, echoed Jennings’ sentiment by simply adding, “very.”
Although Ryan didn’t win, she did come remarkably close, ending in second place with just a $1 gap behind Wallace, the champion of the night. Her close finish made the episode even more memorable for fans following the details on the popular J! Archive site.
Since the show’s launch in 1984, Jeopardy has been a major fixture in television trivia, with legendary host Alex Trebek leading it until 2020. After Trebek’s passing, a series of guest hosts, including Aaron Rodgers and LeVar Burton, temporarily filled the role until Jennings and actress Mayim Bialik were appointed as co-hosts. Bialik later exited, leaving Jennings as the show’s permanent host, much to the approval of long-time fans. Jennings had already become a familiar face for viewers during Trebek’s era, thanks to his record-breaking 74-game winning streak, securing $2.5 million in winnings.
Jennings expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to host the show, sharing with The Hollywood Reporter in December 2023, “Alex Trebek was an essential part of many families, including mine, and I hope to honor that legacy in my own way.”
