The race for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final is heating up, and Sri Lanka has just made a significant move. After their recent win against New Zealand, Sri Lanka has jumped to third place in the WTC points table, making the competition for the final even more exciting.

With India leading the table and Australia close behind, Sri Lanka’s rise adds a new twist to the battle for the top two spots.

Sri Lanka Takes Down New Zealand in Galle Test

Sri Lanka recently faced New Zealand in a thrilling two-match Test series at home. In the first Test at Galle, Sri Lanka pulled off a remarkable victory, defeating New Zealand by 63 runs. This win has had a big impact on the WTC standings.

The match was a nail-biter and was decided on the last day. Chasing a target of 275 runs, New Zealand could only manage to score 211, giving Sri Lanka a well-deserved victory. With this win, Sri Lanka took a 1-0 lead in the series and made a significant jump in the WTC points table.

WTC Points Table: Sri Lanka Jumps to Third Place

Sri Lanka’s win has boosted their win percentage to 50%, moving them from fourth to third place in the WTC points table. Previously, New Zealand held the third spot, but their win percentage has now dropped to 42.86%, pushing them out of the top three.

Currently, India is leading the WTC points table with a win percentage of 71.67%, followed by Australia at 62.50%. Sri Lanka, with their recent victory, is now behind only India and Australia in the rankings. This win has positioned them as a strong contender for the finals, though there’s still a long way to go.

Team India’s Strong Position in WTC

Team India, meanwhile, continues to dominate the WTC table. After their recent win against Bangladesh, India has cemented their place at the top. With a win percentage of 71.67%, India is well on track to reach the WTC final for the third time in a row.

India has played 10 Test matches in this cycle, winning 7 and losing only 2, with 1 match ending in a draw. India still has 9 more matches to play in the WTC, including 4 home games, giving them a great chance to secure their spot in the final.

Australia, too, is in a strong position with a win percentage of 62.50%. They have won 8 out of 12 matches and remain a top contender to reach the WTC final for the second consecutive time.

What’s Next for the WTC Teams?

The competition for the WTC final is getting tougher, especially with Sri Lanka’s rise. However, the final decision on which two teams will make it to the WTC final will likely come down to the crucial series between India and Australia later this year. The two teams will face off in a 5-match Test series, which will play a key role in determining the finalists.

As it stands, Pakistan and West Indies are almost out of the race for the WTC final, leaving India, Australia, and now Sri Lanka as the main contenders for the top two spots.
