RD Burman, also known as Pancham Da, is remembered for his timeless music and unique tunes. However, not many know that he was once hesitant to work with Raj Kapoor, one of Bollywood’s biggest names. The story behind how he created the music for the classic song “Ek Din Bik Jayega” from the movie Dharam Karam is one of nervous beginnings and an unexpected outcome.

RD Burman’s Friendship with Randhir Kapoor

In 1975, Randhir Kapoor made his directorial debut with Dharam Karam. Being close friends with RD Burman, he naturally turned to him for the film’s music. RD Burman had already worked with the Kapoor family on several projects, composing for films featuring Shashi Kapoor and Randhir himself. However, when it came to working with Randhir’s father, the legendary Raj Kapoor, Pancham Da hesitated.

    Why Pancham Da Initially Refused

Raj Kapoor was known for his perfectionism and creativity, traits that intimidated even the most seasoned professionals. RD Burman, having had a tough experience working with another creative genius, Guru Dutt, was worried about facing similar challenges with Raj Kapoor. In the past, Guru Dutt would listen to multiple tunes, only to ask for something new later, leaving RD Burman frustrated and confused. Fearing that Raj Kapoor might be just as demanding, RD Burman told Randhir Kapoor that if he had known he’d have to compose for Raj Kapoor, he wouldn’t have signed the film.

    Randhir Kapoor’s Persistence Paid Off

Despite RD Burman’s initial reluctance, Randhir Kapoor wasn’t willing to give up. He kept persuading Pancham Da, assuring him that his father’s creative input would enhance the music rather than complicate the process. Eventually, RD Burman agreed to compose a tune but remained extremely nervous about presenting it to Raj Kapoor.

The Birth of “Ek Din Bik Jayega”

The real magic happened when RD Burman composed the tune for what would later become the iconic song “Ek Din Bik Jayega Maati Ke Mol.” At the time, the lyrics weren’t even ready, but the melody was so captivating that Raj Kapoor approved it on the spot. In fact, Raj Kapoor, who had a sharp ear for music, confidently predicted that the song would be a massive hit, just based on the tune.

RD Burman’s fears were unfounded, as Raj Kapoor loved the melody from the very first hearing. This marked the beginning of a successful collaboration, and the song went on to become one of the most memorable tracks in Hindi cinema. Raj Kapoor’s faith in RD Burman’s composition was a testament to his ability to recognize great music.

RD Burman’s Work with the Kapoor Family

While the Dharam Karam experience was unique, RD Burman had a long history with the Kapoor family. He had previously composed music for films like Shaan and Pyaar Ka Mausam, starring Shashi Kapoor. Pancham Da also created several chartbusters for Randhir Kapoor in Jawaani Deewani. But perhaps his most prolific work was for Rishi Kapoor’s films, including classics like Khel Khel Mein and Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahi, which featured hit songs like “Khullam Khulla Pyar Karenge” and “Tu Tu Hai Wahi.”

    Pancham Da’s Legacy

RD Burman’s contributions to Bollywood music were unparalleled, and even though he initially doubted his ability to meet Raj Kapoor’s high expectations, he ultimately created a timeless tune that is still cherished today. Pancham Da passed away in 1994, but his music continues to inspire and entertain generations. His journey from hesitating to work with Raj Kapoor to composing an iconic song is a reminder of how creative challenges can often lead to the greatest successes.
