The Bollywood industry, long dominated by male-centric narratives, has seen a significant shift in recent years. The phrase “Ek Nari Sab Par Bhari” is no longer just a slogan; it’s a reality that Bollywood’s leading actresses have repeatedly proven. Traditionally, films required a hero, a heroine, and a villain, with heroines often relegated to supporting roles or mere eye-candy for dance sequences. However, this narrative has dramatically changed as actresses now headline blockbuster films, drawing audiences and driving box office success on their merit.

One of the most recent examples is Stree 2, where Shraddha Kapoor’s performance has been a central element in the film’s massive success. The horror-comedy sequel has smashed the box office, crossing the 400-crore mark in India alone, and Shraddha’s role has been widely praised. But Shraddha is not the first to lead a female-centric film to such heights. Actresses like Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt have also set benchmarks in the industry, proving that a strong female lead can be just as bankable as their male counterparts. Here’s a look at some of the most iconic female-centric films that have made their mark.

    1. Gangubai Kathiawadi – Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt’s career trajectory has been impressive, with very few flops under her belt. With each film, she continues to refine her craft and solidify her position as one of Bollywood’s top actresses. Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a standout in her filmography. In this biographical crime drama, Alia portrayed the life of Gangubai, a powerful figure in Mumbai’s underworld. The film was a commercial success, grossing ₹10.50 crores on its opening day and ultimately raking in ₹211.5 crores at the box office. Alia’s performance was lauded, and the film reinforced her status as a leading lady capable of carrying a film on her own.

    2. Padmaavat – Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone has consistently delivered stellar performances, with a discerning approach to her film choices. She has the unique distinction of starring in three films that have crossed the ₹1000 crore mark. Among her female-centric films, Padmaavat stands out. In this epic period drama, Deepika played the titular role of Rani Padmavati, embodying grace, strength, and resilience. The film, made on a budget of ₹215 crores, earned a whopping ₹585 crores worldwide. Deepika’s portrayal of Padmavati was not just a performance; it was a statement on the power and dignity of womanhood.

    3. Raazi – Alia Bhatt

Another feather in Alia Bhatt’s cap is Raazi, an Indian spy thriller that showcased her versatility as an actress. Based on Harinder Sikka’s novel Calling Sehmat, the film tells the story of a young Indian woman who marries into a Pakistani military family to spy for her country. Alia’s portrayal of Sehmat was both innocent and intense, earning widespread acclaim. The film, made on a modest budget of ₹37 crores, grossed ₹195 crores worldwide. Raazi is a prime example of how a female-led film can be both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

    4. Queen – Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood, often shouldering entire films on her own. Queen, released in 2014, is a prime example of her ability to captivate audiences without the need for a traditional male lead. The film tells the story of Rani, a young woman who embarks on her honeymoon alone after her fiancé calls off their wedding. Kangana’s performance as Rani was universally praised for its authenticity and charm. Made on a budget of just ₹20 crores, Queen went on to earn around ₹95 crores, proving that compelling storytelling and strong performances are the true drivers of success.

    The Changing Landscape of Bollywood

The success of these films marks a significant shift in Bollywood, where female-centric narratives are no longer exceptions but are increasingly becoming the norm. These actresses have not only redefined what it means to be a Bollywood heroine but have also demonstrated that films driven by strong female characters can achieve both critical and commercial success. As the industry continues to evolve, audiences can expect to see more powerful performances and compelling stories led by Bollywood’s leading ladies.
