The Malayalam film industry is currently facing intense scrutiny as multiple actresses have come forward with allegations of sexual harassment and unequal treatment. These accusations have sparked a wider discussion on the working conditions and systemic issues within the industry. While some of the industry’s biggest stars, including Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Fahadh Faasil, have remained silent on the matter, actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Telugu star Nani have broken their silence, condemning the situation and calling for change.
Prithviraj Sukumaran Criticizes AMMA’s Inaction
Prithviraj Sukumaran, known for his bold stance on various social issues, has now voiced his concerns regarding the Malayalam film industry’s handling of sexual harassment cases. Reacting to the findings of the Justice Hema Committee report, Prithviraj revealed that he was one of the first people to give a statement to the committee. He emphasized the need for strict action against those found guilty, criticizing the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) for its failure to address complaints properly.
Prithviraj expressed disappointment over AMMA’s handling of the complaint filed by actress Sridevika against director Tulsidas, where no action was taken despite her formal complaint. “AMMA needs to intervene and take strict action in such cases,” Prithviraj stated, urging the organization to do more to protect its members, especially women.
Nani Calls the Situation in Malayalam Cinema ‘Scary’
Telugu actor Nani, who is widely respected in the South Indian film industry, also shared his thoughts on the alarming revelations of the Hema Committee report. In an interview, Nani expressed deep concern over the mistreatment of women in the Malayalam film industry, describing the situation as “scary.” He lamented that the state of affairs in the industry has worsened over time, pointing out that conditions were better in the past.
Nani drew parallels between the current situation and the infamous Nirbhaya case, which shook the nation in 2012. “Since the Nirbhaya case, it has been bothering me that such issues never seem to end,” Nani said, adding that he finds the current social climate particularly troubling. He also expressed fear over the impact of social media on the propagation of such issues, stating, “We are in the midst of a social media boom, and it’s terrifying how easily misinformation and negative behavior spread.”
Nani Reflects on the Decline in Social Standards
Nani’s reflections didn’t stop there. He voiced his concerns about the overall decline in social standards, especially regarding the treatment of women. “20 years ago, things were much better,” Nani observed, suggesting that the current era represents a low point in terms of respect and safety for women. His comments have sparked a debate on whether the entertainment industry, and society at large, has truly progressed or if it is regressing in certain areas.
The Revelations of the Justice Hema Committee Report
The Justice Hema Committee report, which has brought these issues to the forefront, was established following a 2017 incident where a Malayalam actress was sexually assaulted. The Kerala government formed a three-member commission to investigate the industry’s working conditions, with retired Justice K Hema heading the committee, alongside former officer KB Valsalakumari and veteran actress Sharada.
The report, which was submitted to the government in 2019, was only recently made public, revealing shocking details about the Malayalam film industry. It highlighted numerous issues, including widespread sexual harassment, the lack of basic facilities for women, such as washrooms and changing rooms, pay disparities, and gender discrimination. The revelations have prompted outrage and calls for immediate reforms to protect women and improve working conditions in the industry.
As more voices like Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nani join the chorus of those demanding change, the pressure is mounting on industry bodies like AMMA to take decisive action. The Malayalam film industry, long revered for its artistic contributions, now faces a critical juncture where it must address these issues head-on to ensure a safer and more equitable environment for all its members.
