The name Jugraj Singh may be new to many, but his story is nothing short of inspirational. Jugraj, who grew up near the India-Pakistan border in Attari, Punjab, faced immense hardships throughout his life. His village, located on the tense border, was frequently disturbed by cross-border firing. At one point, the situation became so dangerous that the Indian Army had to evacuate his entire village.

Despite these challenges, Jugraj’s determination remained unshaken. His family struggled financially, and to make ends meet, Jugraj sold water bottles at the border. His father, a porter, also worked hard to support the family. In the face of such adversity, Jugraj found solace in hockey, which he believed could be his way out of poverty.

A Passion for Hockey Leads to a Life-Changing Opportunity

Jugraj’s passion for hockey was inspired by two players from his village—Shamsher Singh and Chatara Singh. These role models motivated him to pursue the sport seriously. He enrolled in the Hockey Academy in Jalandhar and soon earned a place in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) hockey team in 2011. Though he only received a stipend of Rs. 3500, his hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed.

In 2016, Jugraj’s life took a significant turn when he was recruited by the Indian Navy. His selection was a game-changer, as his salary jumped from Rs. 3500 to Rs. 35000. He was made a Team Petty Officer, a role that provided him and his family with financial stability.

Asian Champions Trophy: Jugraj Singh’s Defining Moment

Jugraj’s dedication to hockey paid off in a big way during the Asian Champions Trophy final, where India faced a tough opponent in China. The match was intense, with both teams battling it out for the title. In the 51st minute of the fourth quarter, Jugraj Singh scored a crucial goal, giving India a 1-0 lead that proved decisive in securing the win.

This moment marked a significant achievement for Jugraj, who went from selling water bottles at the border to becoming the hero of India’s victory in an international tournament. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination.
