In a remarkable feat at the Paris Paralympics 2024, Suhas L. Yathiraj, an IAS officer and talented para-badminton player, has once again proven that determination and passion can overcome any challenge. Suhas won the silver medal in the Men’s Badminton SL-4 category, adding yet another accolade to his impressive list of achievements. This is his second consecutive silver medal in the Paralympics, following his success in Tokyo 2021. His journey is a powerful story of resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to both his profession and his sport.

    Turning Passion into Success

Suhas’s journey to becoming a Paralympic medalist is as unique as it is inspiring. Born in Shimoga, Karnataka, Suhas was diagnosed with a congenital leg impairment. However, this condition never deterred him. From an early age, Suhas developed a keen interest in sports, particularly badminton and cricket. Despite his physical challenges, his family always encouraged him to pursue his passions. This early support laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong love for badminton.

After completing his engineering degree in computer science from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Suhas faced another personal challenge—the sudden passing of his father in 2005. This was a turning point in his life, motivating him to join the civil services to make a meaningful impact on society. In 2007, he successfully cleared the UPSC exam and became an IAS officer.

    A New Chapter in Badminton

While fulfilling his duties as an IAS officer in various districts of Uttar Pradesh, Suhas never lost touch with his love for badminton. His passion was reignited during a local badminton tournament where he played a few matches. Noticing his talent and dedication, coach Gaurav Khanna took Suhas under his wing, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his badminton journey. Under Khanna’s guidance, Suhas honed his skills, blending the discipline of an administrator with the focus of an athlete.

From District Magistrate to International Champion

Suhas’s dual roles as an IAS officer and a badminton player have been nothing short of extraordinary. In 2016, he made history by winning a gold medal at the Asian Para-Badminton Championships, becoming the first Indian administrative officer to achieve such a feat on an international platform. His commitment to both his administrative responsibilities and his sport exemplifies a rare dedication to excellence.

The year 2021 marked a significant milestone in Suhas’s career. As the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, he managed to balance his official duties with rigorous training for the Tokyo Paralympics. His hard work paid off when he won the silver medal, becoming the first Indian bureaucrat to achieve this honor. This achievement was a testament to his resilience and ability to excel in multiple arenas simultaneously.

At the Paris Paralympics 2024, Suhas faced a tough challenge in the finals against Lucas Mazur of France. Despite his best efforts, Suhas lost in straight sets, with scores of 9-21 and 13-21. While the gold eluded him, his silver medal was a momentous achievement, reinforcing his status as one of India’s leading para-athletes. His journey to the finals was filled with intense competition, but Suhas’s determination shone through, inspiring millions back home.

    Breaking Barriers and Setting Records

Suhas’s achievements are not just limited to his medals. He has broken numerous barriers and set records that will inspire generations to come. By winning his second consecutive silver medal at the Paralympics, he has become the first Indian badminton player to win medals in two Paralympics. His success is a reflection of his ability to balance the demands of a public service career with the rigors of international sports.

Whether it’s on the badminton court or in his administrative office, Suhas has shown that with determination, hard work, and a positive mindset, anything is possible. His journey is an inspiration to all, reminding us that success is not just about the destination but also about the journey and the spirit of never giving up.
