Team India’s much-awaited ODI series against Bangladesh may face cancellation due to rising political unrest in the neighbouring country. As per reports, the situation in Bangladesh has turned unstable since the change in power, raising serious safety concerns. The Indian government is reportedly hesitant to grant travel clearance, which may force the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to call off or postpone the tour.
Team India was scheduled to travel to Bangladesh in mid-August for a limited-overs series comprising three ODIs and three T20Is. Cricket fans were excited, especially because star players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were expected to return to the field in the ODI leg. However, current developments suggest the series may not happen as planned.
Why the Bangladesh Tour Is at Risk
After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation in August last year, Bangladesh has been run by an interim government. Since then, the nation has seen frequent protests and political instability. According to sources, this has directly impacted the planning of international events, including cricket.
The central Indian government has reportedly flagged security concerns for Indian players, especially with no guarantee of peace in the host country during the tour. In such situations, governments often avoid sending national teams abroad, even for scheduled international events, to prevent unnecessary risks.
BCCI and BCB Still in Talks
While there is no official announcement yet, both cricket boards—BCCI and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)—are expected to hold urgent discussions soon. There are chances that the tour may be postponed instead of cancelled, giving both countries time to review the situation.
Interestingly, Bangladesh had also delayed the bidding process for media rights for this series, indicating their uncertainty around hosting the matches. This adds weight to the rumours that both boards were already aware of potential hurdles ahead.
What It Means for Indian Cricket Fans
The India vs Bangladesh ODI series was expected to bring back big names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the 50-over format. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 around the corner, fans hoped to see the core ODI squad in action. If the tour gets scrapped, players may get limited opportunities for ODI match practice before the major tournament.
Moreover, such international assignments are crucial for bench players and young talents to gain experience. A cancelled tour may also affect team combinations and fitness routines of senior players.
