The IPL 2025 mega auction has stirred excitement, with franchises submitting their lists of retained and released players. While iconic names like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni remain with their teams, some big players were unexpectedly released. Stars like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer are now up for grabs, but other notable releases might face challenges in the auction. Here’s a look at five players who, despite their legendary status, might struggle to find buyers in IPL 2025.

    1. David Warner

Australian batting powerhouse David Warner, released by Delhi Capitals, is a surprising name on this list. Warner is among the top batsmen in IPL history and has an incredible record as both an opener and captain. However, at 37 and with a few performance dips in recent seasons, his demand in this year’s auction seems uncertain. Teams may opt to focus on younger, more promising players, which puts Warner’s IPL future in doubt.

Chances of Being Unsold: High, as teams look to invest in youth for the long haul.

    2. Matthew Wade

Matthew Wade, recently released by Gujarat Titans and retired from international cricket, finds himself on the brink of his IPL journey coming to an end. At 36, Wade is still a talented wicketkeeper-batsman, but with several young and versatile wicketkeepers emerging, he might not be in high demand. Wade’s age, coupled with limited availability and competition from local Indian wicketkeepers, may work against him in this auction.

Chances of Being Unsold: High, due to age and intense competition in his role.

    3. Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane, known for his reliable performances over the years, has had a decorated IPL career with teams like Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, and Chennai Super Kings. Yet, Rahane’s recent IPL form and absence from the Indian squad have made him less appealing to franchises looking for power hitters. The IPL 2025 auction might not see much interest in Rahane as teams tend to prioritize T20 specialists over traditional anchors in recent times.

Chances of Being Unsold: High, given his style doesn’t fully align with the fast-paced T20 format.

    4. Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey, the first Indian batsman to score an IPL century, has been a solid contributor for many franchises. Recently released by Kolkata Knight Riders, Pandey faces stiff competition, especially as his recent IPL performances have not met expectations. Although he brings experience and adaptability, Pandey may struggle to attract franchises focused on high strike-rate players. If he doesn’t receive competitive bids, Pandey’s IPL run could take a break this season.

Chances of Being Unsold: Moderate to high, especially if younger batsmen are prioritized.

    5. Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson, the former captain of New Zealand and a respected T20 strategist, was released by Gujarat Titans after an injury-riddled season. Williamson’s experience is unmatched, but his recent form and current injury concerns are significant hurdles. Known for his finesse and composure, Williamson’s game is less suited to IPL’s aggressive style, making him a risky choice for teams aiming to secure a dynamic middle-order batter.

Chances of Being Unsold: Moderate to high, as teams may hesitate to gamble on an injured player.

Why These Players Face an Uncertain IPL Future

The reasons these legendary players might go unsold in IPL 2025 are varied. Age, recent performance issues, and injuries play a big part, especially when teams are leaning toward younger, high-impact players for T20 formats. As the auction approaches, franchises will carefully consider their strategies, balancing experience with the need for explosive performance and availability.

Each of these players has had an illustrious IPL career, and while they may not find teams this season, their impact on the league remains undeniable. The IPL 2025 auction will reveal whether any team is willing to take a chance on these legends.
