In a significant decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has suspended IPL 2025 immediately as tensions rise between India and Pakistan. The announcement came late Thursday night after cross-border air strikes raised serious safety concerns for players, staff, and spectators.
So far, 58 matches out of the scheduled 74 have been completed in the tournament. The remaining 16 games, including playoffs and the final, planned for May 25 in Kolkata, have now been postponed.
BCCI officials confirmed that the tournament will not continue under the current circumstances. “It is not right to continue playing cricket when the country is facing military conflict,” a senior official told PTI.
Safety Concerns Prompt Sudden Suspension
The growing fear among foreign players played a significant role in the decision. According to inside reports, several international cricketers expressed their desire to leave India immediately due to the rising threat.
The turning point came when air raid alerts were issued in Jammu and Pathankot. The Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamshala was under a cloud of doubt throughout the day, and it was eventually confirmed that the match would not go ahead.
With player safety as the top priority, the BCCI had no choice but to take this step. All franchises have been informed, and further decisions about rescheduling will be made once the situation stabilises.
Cross-Border Strikes Shake Both Countries’ Cricket Plans
The military action on Thursday night included multiple airstrikes carried out by Pakistan near Jammu and along India’s western border. India responded strongly, using its air defence systems to intercept the attacks. This led to a nationwide alert and raised concerns over hosting significant public events.
In Pakistan, cricket has been affected, too. The Pakistan Super League (PSL), which was in its final stages, will now shift to the United Arab Emirates. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Friday that the remaining eight matches will be played in UAE instead of Rawalpindi, Multan, and Lahore.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi alleged that India had deliberately targeted Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. However, India’s Ministry of Defence clarified that Indian airstrikes only hit specific military targets and did not aim at any sports facility.
Foreign Players Fearful in Both Leagues
Due to growing instability, foreign players in IPL and PSL have started making arrangements to exit the subcontinent. English players, in particular, participating in the PSL, are reportedly reconsidering their stay.
In the IPL, players from Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and England raised strong concerns. As per reports, several overseas cricketers demanded immediate flights back home following government travel advisories.
The situation has left franchises, sponsors, and fans in shock. However, all stakeholders have supported prioritising human life over the sport.
Future Schedule Uncertain
The BCCI has not yet confirmed whether the remaining matches will be cancelled or played later. Much will depend on how the current geopolitical tension unfolds in the coming weeks.
Officials also said that discussions will be held with franchises and broadcasters to decide the financial and logistical impacts.
For now, India’s top cricketing event comes to a standstill, reflecting the seriousness of the regional situation.
