PR Sreejesh, India’s legendary goalkeeper and two-time Olympic medalist, is set to make his debut as the coach of India’s junior men’s hockey team. The team will face Japan in their opening match of the 12th Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia on Saturday. Sreejesh, who retired after helping India secure a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics, has taken on the responsibility of leading the next generation of hockey stars. Under his guidance, the Indian team is eyeing their fourth title in this prestigious tournament.
India’s Strong History in Sultan of Johor Cup
India has a proud history in the Sultan of Johor Cup, having won the title three times— in 2013, 2014, and 2022. Additionally, the team has finished as runners-up four times, showcasing their consistent performance in this competition. In their last encounter with Japan at the Junior Asia Cup in May 2023, India emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. The team also defeated Japan 5-1 in the 2022 edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup.
Excitement Under New Coach Sreejesh
Captain Aamir Ali has expressed confidence in the team’s preparations under Sreejesh. “The team is training well under the leadership of our new head coach, and we are eager to play our first tournament with him,” said Ali. The Indian team, with a mix of seasoned players and fresh talent, is determined to bounce back after narrowly missing out on defending their title last year.
Upcoming Matches in Group Stage
India’s journey in the Sultan of Johor Cup will continue with matches against Great Britain on October 20, host Malaysia on October 22, and Australia on October 23. Their final group-stage match will be against New Zealand on October 25. The top two teams from the league stage will advance to the final, scheduled for October 26.
Eyes on Junior Asia Cup
Vice-captain Rohit highlighted the team’s hard work and preparation, adding that the players are motivated and eager to showcase their skills. “There are many new faces in the team who are excited to prove themselves on the field. Everyone is pushing each other to improve,” said Rohit. He also mentioned that while the focus is currently on the Sultan of Johor Cup, the team is also preparing for the Junior Men’s Asia Cup in Muscat, scheduled for November.
Sreejesh’s Vision for Coaching
After playing a key role in India’s Olympic success, PR Sreejesh revealed his desire to become a mentor for young players, drawing inspiration from Rahul Dravid, who has successfully guided India’s under-19 cricket team. Sreejesh’s goal is to develop the next generation of hockey players and help them succeed at the international level.
