Sudesh Lahiri, the well-known comedian and actor, has become a household name in India. His unique sense of humor, combined with impeccable comic timing, has won the hearts of millions. Currently in the limelight for his work in ‘Laughter Chefs,’ Sudesh recently shared his inspiring personal and professional journey on a podcast hosted by Bharti Singh and Harsh Limbachiyaa, alongside his wife, Mamta. His story is filled with ups and downs, struggles, and the determination to succeed against all odds.
A Marriage Born Out of Family Bonds
In a candid revelation, Sudesh shared that his marriage was not a typical love story but an arranged one. He got married at the young age of 17 to Mamta, who was just 15 at the time. What makes their relationship unique is that Mamta was his brother’s sister-in-law. Despite the early age, Sudesh initially had second thoughts about marriage under the influence of his friends. However, his family convinced him, and the wedding took place in a simple ceremony at a temple.
He recalls the day, “It was a Sunday, and my family decided that it was time to get married. Mamta was at a cousin’s wedding, and we brought her to the temple. No band, no planning, just a simple wedding, and by noon, we were back home.”
A Supportive Partner in Tough Times
Despite being so young, Mamta became a pillar of support for Sudesh. He openly admits that without her, he wouldn’t have reached where he is today. He credits his wife for standing by him during their most challenging times, even when they decided to move away from the joint family and start living in a rented house.
“We didn’t even have money for a burner. We used to cook tea by using ghee cans as lamps and borrowed utensils from the landlord,” Sudesh shared, reminiscing about their difficult early days.
From Gold Business to Comedy
Before becoming a comedian, Sudesh worked with his father in the gold business. He learned the trade and used to earn Rs 100-200 daily, which was a big amount back then. Despite being good at the business, Sudesh always dreamed of becoming an artist. However, the initial years of trying to make a mark in the entertainment industry were far from easy.
Sudesh recalled, “My earnings as an artist were even less than what I made in the gold business. But Mamta believed in me, and we kept moving forward.”
Overcoming Relationship Struggles
Like many young couples, Sudesh and Mamta faced challenges in their relationship, especially since they got married at a very young age. Sudesh admits that at one point, he wanted to leave his wife and children. Influenced by others and driven by frustration, he considered selling their house and leaving them. However, Mamta’s patience and his own self-reflection led him to realize his mistakes.
“One day, I realized I was being foolish. I apologized to Mamta, and since then, we’ve worked on strengthening our relationship. I owe a lot to her,” he said.
The Struggle to Find Work
Even after his cassette became popular, Sudesh struggled to find consistent work. Despite his growing fame, financial stability eluded him. He had to sell his house and scooter during tough times.
“We had to return to the days of struggle. I went to all the production companies, practically begging for work. Everyone would direct me to T-Series. I went there, handed over my cassette, and they liked it. They asked me how much I would charge, but after giving me hope, they refused the next day,” he recalled.
A Breakthrough with T-Series
Sudesh’s determination paid off when T-Series finally released his cassette. Although it became a hit, he still didn’t see an immediate boost in his career. It was only later that he realized his performances were more suited for Hindi audiences. At the time, he had been imitating Hindi singers, which helped him hone his craft.
In the podcast, Sudesh talked about his long friendship with comedian Bharti Singh. He shared how the two would often get into mischief during their college days, forming a bond that continues to this day.
The Role of Family in His Success
Sudesh Lahiri attributes much of his success to his wife and family. He says that Mamta’s unwavering belief in him during their most challenging moments kept him going. Now, as one of India’s top comedians, Sudesh enjoys a successful career and has earned the love and admiration of fans across the country.
Sudesh Lahiri’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of family support during tough times. From making tea on ghee cans to becoming a comedy star, his story is truly inspiring.
