In a major development from Hyderabad, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has started an investigation into a betting app scam involving 29 well-known celebrities from Telangana. The list includes film actors, TV anchors, YouTubers, and social media influencers. Big names like Vijay Devarakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, Nidhi Aggarwal, and Manchu Lakshmi are reportedly being questioned for their links with this case.
The complaint came from Fanindra Sharma, a 32-year-old businessman from Miyapur, who claimed that betting apps promoted by stars are tricking young users and affecting the financial health of middle-class families. Based on his complaint, the Sibrabad police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on 19 March 2025, following which the ED began tracing financial records.
Stars Promoted Apps That May Have Misled Users
According to ED officials, several celebrities promoted platforms that later turned out to be illegal betting apps. The digital transactions suggest involvement of crores of rupees. These apps offered high returns through games of chance, attracting a large number of users, especially from younger age groups.
The ED is now checking whether celebrities knowingly promoted these platforms or if they were unaware of the illegal aspects. So far, no arrests have been made, but statements are being recorded.
Young Users Lured by Quick Money Hopes
Many young people, especially students and unemployed youth, fell into the trap of these betting platforms. These apps, often disguised as gaming or entertainment apps, promised quick returns and easy earnings. The complaint mentions that middle and lower-middle-class families are facing financial pressure due to money lost in such apps.
The ED is examining if these platforms were used for money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Several bank transactions and payment gateway records have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Clarifications from Vijay Devarakonda and Prakash Raj
As per recent updates, Vijay Devarakonda’s team clarified that he had only endorsed A23, a platform claimed to be based on skill-based games. His association ended in 2023, and he has had no link since then. On the other hand, Prakash Raj admitted promoting an app in 2016 but claimed he withdrew his support after learning it might be problematic.
Other celebrities like Srimukhi and Ananya Nagalla are also expected to be questioned in the coming days. The ED has not made any accusations public yet, and the case is still under early investigation.
