Gulshan Grover, the actor who redefined villainy in Bollywood, has had a journey filled with ups and downs. Known as the ‘Bad Man’ of Hindi cinema, his evil characters have made a lasting impact on Indian films. But behind this success lies a story of grit and determination, as Grover’s childhood was far from easy.

Born on September 21, 1955, in Delhi, Gulshan Grover’s early years were filled with struggles. Coming from a humble background, he had to work hard to fulfill his dreams, and the path to Bollywood fame wasn’t easy.

A Childhood of Hardships: Selling Goods to Pay for School Fees

Growing up in a financially constrained household, Grover faced many difficulties, one of which was paying his school fees. To make ends meet, the young Grover would go door-to-door, selling items like utensils and laundry powder. His daily routine involved carrying a school bag filled with his dress for school while balancing his responsibilities as a young salesman.

Though money was scarce, Grover’s passion for acting burned bright. He used every opportunity to nurture his love for acting. After completing his education in Delhi, he set his sights on Mumbai, the city of dreams.

Learning the Craft: Acting School and Friendship with Anil Kapoor

When Gulshan Grover arrived in Mumbai, he joined an acting school where he learned the finer points of the craft. It was here that he formed a close friendship with actor Anil Kapoor, a bond that would last throughout their careers. Both aspiring actors had their eyes set on making it big in Bollywood, but the road ahead was long and filled with challenges.

Despite the struggles, Grover never gave up. His persistence and dedication paid off when he landed his first role in Bollywood.

Bollywood Debut: ‘Hum Paanch’ and the Rise of the ‘Bad Man’

Gulshan Grover made his debut in the 1980 film Hum Paanch, which marked the beginning of his career in Bollywood. However, it was his portrayal of villains in various films during the 90s that cemented his place in the industry. Grover became the go-to actor for negative roles, terrifying audiences with his unforgettable performances.

Some of his notable films include Doodh Ka Karz, Ram Lakhan, Mohra, Hera Pheri, and International Khiladi. His ability to play the perfect villain earned him the title ‘Bad Man’, a character type he is still remembered for today.

One of his most celebrated performances came in the film I Am Kalam, for which he received the National Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Personal Life: Two Marriages and a Son

While Grover’s professional life has been a roaring success, his personal life has been less smooth. The actor married twice, but both marriages ended in divorce. His first marriage to Philomina in 1998 lasted only three years, and the couple had a son named Sanjay Grover. In 2003, he married Kashish, but this marriage too ended within a year.
