Gulzar—just the name is enough to evoke emotions that resonate deeply with generations of music lovers. With a pen that has delicately carved out feelings and stories, Gulzar has become a beloved figure in Indian cinema and literature. His words have given life to songs across all genres, from soulful ghazals and nazms to catchy item numbers and children’s melodies. As he celebrates his 90th birthday, let’s take a moment to explore the unmatched versatility of this legendary writer.

The Magic of Gulzar’s Item Songs

While Gulzar is widely known for his poetic depth, his ability to write item songs that became chartbusters is equally impressive. Writing an item song is no easy feat, especially for a poet of Gulzar’s caliber. Yet, he managed to infuse even these peppy, dance numbers with a charm that made them instant hits.

One of the most iconic item songs penned by Gulzar is “Kajra Re” from the film Bunty Aur Babli. The song, with its infectious energy and brilliant lyrics, quickly became a sensation. It’s a track that gets people on their feet, and even today, it’s a must-play at weddings and parties.

Another fiery track is “Beedi Jalaile” from the movie Omkara. Gulzar’s clever use of rustic, earthy language combined with pulsating music made this song an anthem of sorts. It became a staple at celebrations across the country, with people dancing to its beats everywhere. Alongside it was “Namak Ishq Ka,” also from Omkara, where Gulzar’s lyrics and Rekha Bhardwaj’s soulful voice created a timeless piece that remains etched in the memory of every listener.

    Gulzar’s Touch in Children’s Songs

Gulzar’s versatility extends beyond item numbers, as he has also crafted some of the most memorable children’s songs in Indian cinema. These songs, filled with innocence and joy, have been cherished by both children and adults alike.

A classic example is “Lakdi Ki Kaathi” from the film Masoom. This playful song, performed by children, has been a favorite at school functions and continues to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane for many. The way Gulzar captured the simplicity and fun of childhood in this song is truly remarkable.

Another gem is “Sa Re Ke Sa Re” from the movie Parichay. In this track, Gulzar introduces the seven notes of music in a way that is both educational and entertaining. His ability to teach through music is evident in this beautifully composed song.

Gulzar’s brilliance shines through in “Masterji Ki Aa Gayi Chitthi” from the film Kitab, which captures the excitement and anticipation of receiving a letter. And who can forget “Hum Ko Man Ki Shakti Dena” from Guddi? This song, which has become a prayer in schools, speaks of inner strength and peace, showcasing Gulzar’s knack for blending simplicity with profound meaning.

The Timeless “Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai”

When talking about Gulzar’s contributions to children’s entertainment, one cannot miss the iconic title track of the TV series Mowgli. The song “Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai” became a cultural phenomenon. The catchy tune and Gulzar’s evocative lyrics made it an instant favorite, not just among children, but adults as well. Even today, the song remains a beloved piece of nostalgia for many who grew up watching Mowgli.
